E’Hawks Qualify For State Duals With Regional Championship

SPIRIT?LAKE – It took a couple of rallies to pull it off by the E’Hawks of Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire earned the Class 2A Regional Dual title at Spirit Lake last Wednesday night. The win punches the E’Hawks’ ticket for a return trip to the State Team Duals on Feb. 27 in Cedar Rapids.

The E’Hawks had to work plenty hard to come up with the wins, as they trailed in both of their duals with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and Sheldon/South O’Brien before coming away with the wins for the Regional banner.

Opening against the Nighthawks of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, the E’Hawks went back and forth early in the dual.

Wrestling started at 189 pounds, where Jake Morris started with a :43 pin o Daniel Hoogendoorn, but at 215, Derek Henkelvig was pined in 1:36 of his match with Micah Hoogendoorn.

John Ruddy came up with a 7-3 decision victory over Jordan Lutjens in the heavyweight match before Tyler Leuer lost a 3-2 decision in the 103 pound match to Zach Bliek to tie the match score at 9-9.

Isaac Lundgren scored a 3:04 win by fall over Austin Gregg at 112 pounds before the E’Hawks forfeited at 119. Justin Studer bounced up to 125 but was the victim of a 3:36 pin by Hunter Berkenpas that gave the Nighthawks a 21-15 advantage.

At 130, Brady Bailey lost a 7-3 decision to Nate Taylor, but Skyler Rice got the E’Hawks back on track with his lightning-quick :21 win by fall over Mike Garcia.

Jake Stubbs would collect a hard-fought 16-14 decision win over Dillon Schamber to tie the dual back up at 24-24 with four matches to wrestle.

Austin McCarten would come up short in a 6-1 decision loss to Dallas Rozeboom in the 145 pound match, but at 152 Andrew Wellik came up with a 3:27 win by fall over Ty Koldenhoven to put the E’Hawks on top for good at 30-27.

Joey Naig would need just :17 to pin Lane Hiller in the 160 pound match and at 171, Howard Henkelvig earned a 9-5 decision win over Taylor Zeutenhorst to give Emmetsburg/AR/RA the 39-27 win over the Nighthawks.

The win set up the Regional title dual with Sheldon/South O’Brien, who had defeated Algona/NSK in their half of the regional.

Starting at 215 pounds this time, Derek Henkelvig was pinned in 2:36 by Pete Matthews and at heavyweight, John Ruddy was pinned in 2:46 by Joe Feekes.

The Orabs took an 18-0 lead after Austin Bainbridge pinned Tyler Leuer in 3:04 of the 103 pound match, but the E’Hawks hadn’t hung their heads just yet.

Isaac Lundgren pinned Josh Gorter in 1;40 of the 112 pound match and at 119, Justin Studer pinned Dylan Logan in 2:44. The E’Hawks forfeited at 125, but at 130, Brady Bailey lost a hard-fought 10-9 decision to Mike Faust to make the score 27-12 in favor of the Orabs.

Skyler Rice brought the E’Hawks storming back at 135 pounds with a :53 pin of Matt Williams and Jake Stubbs added a 1:24 win by fall over Spencer Tischer to cut the deficit to 24-27.

Austin McCartan earned a 2:34 win by fall over Chris Granstra in action at 145 pounds to give the E’Hawks the lead once and for all, before Andrew Wellik added his :45 win by fall over Andrew Koehlmoos at 152 pounds.

With a 36-27 lead, the E’Hawks didn’t look back, as Joey Naig rolled to a 16-7 major decision over Tanner Matthews before Howard Henkelvig was pinned in :49 of his match with Tim Jeness.

But Jake Morris put the exclamation point on the dual and the night with his 2:24 win by fall over Bruce McWilliams to give the E’Hawks the 46-33 final victory and the State Tournament qualification banner.

Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire will meet Ballard in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A portion of the State Duals on Saturday, Feb. 27, in the U.S. Cellular Arena in downtown Cedar Rapids.

The E’Hawks vs Ballard dual is scheduled to begin promptly at 12 noon.
