Knights Wrestling Hard As Season Winds Down

GRAETTINGER – The Knight Wrestlers of Graettinger/Terril took second place at last weekend’s Laurens-Marathon Tournament nd picked up four championships in the process. And, in a triangular last Thursday, the Knights went 2-1 with wins over Twin River Valley and Pocahontas Area and a loss to Rockwell City-Lytton/ Southern Cal.

At Laurens-Marathon, the Knights earned championships from Ryan Schany at 135 pounds, as well as Heath Marchand at 140. Michael Jensen earned championship honors at 145 pounds and Nate Howard earned first place honors at 215 pounds for the Knights.

Second place honors were claimed by Austin Thompson at 112 pounds and Tyler Manning at 119 pounds, while Trent Lundgren at 125, Tym Hart at 130 and Quinn Parker at 189 all earned third place honors, along with Connor Tonderum at 119 in the JV competition.

Mitch McGrauth at 285 and Zach Chicoine at 125 in the JV?competition earned fourth place and Hunter Miner placed sixth at 112 in the JV.

In a triangular on Thursday, the Knights downed TRV by a 60-16 score. Connor Tonderum, Trent Lundgren, Tym Hart, Michael Jensen, Paolo Lazo, Quinn Parker, Nate Howard, Mitch McGrauth and Tyler Dalen all won by forfeits. Heath Marchand was pinned in 3:09 by Peyton Vote at 140 and at 112, Austin Thompson lost a 10-2 decision to Brance Simms. The Knights forfeited two weights to the Thunder in the dual. Against RCL/SC, the Knights lost 27-46. Tym Hart and Ryan Schany lost by falls, but Heath Marchand and Michael Jensen came back to win by falls.

Paolo Lazo was a pin victim and the Knights forfeited at 160 and 171. Quinn Parker was pinned before Nate Howard won by a fall.

Mitch McGrauth was pinned, but Tyler Dalen earned a 6-0 decision victory. Austin Thompson lost a 4-0 decision and Connor Tonderum lost a 9-0 major decision, but Trent Lundgren earned a win by fall for the 27-46 final.

In the dual with Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer, the Knights took a 46-23 victory over the Indians.

Trent Lundgren scored a 7-6 decision and Tym Hart received a win by forfeit. Ryan Schany earned a win by fall and Heath Marchand won an 11-5 decision. Michael Jensen took a win by fall, but Paolo Lazo was pinned in his 152 pound match. The Knights forfeited at 160 and 171 and at 189 Quinn Parker won an 8-5 decision.

Nate Howard won by a forfeit but Mitch McGrauth was pinned in the heavyweight match.

Tyler Dalen scored a win by fall, while Austin Thompson scored an 11-0 major decision and Connor Tonderum won a 9-5 decision.

“I thought we wrestled well and got better as the night went on,”?GT Head Coach Cody Alesch said. “Now, we just need to be ready for this weekend’s sectionals.”

The Knights will enter the tournament trail on Saturday when they participate in the 1A Sectional tournament at Okoboji High School in Milford. Along with the Knights will be wrestlers from Alta, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Kingsley-Pierson, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, Sibley-Ocheyedan and Okoboji.

Sectional action begins at 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 6.
