Knight Grapplers Finish In Mid-Pack At Herb Irgens Invite
IDA GROVE – After winning the championship last year at the Herb Irgens Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Ida Grove, the Knights of Graettinger/Terril found the competition a little bit tougher this past weekend. Coach Cody Alesch’s Knights finished in 12th place at the 22 team tournament, which saw newcomers Gilbertville Don Bosco earn the team title.
The Knights brought home a second place finish from it’s only wrestler to qualify for the championship round.
“As a team we wrestled very well on Friday as we advanced all 10 wrestlers we brought into Saturday,” said Graettinger/Terril coach Cody Alesch. “We wrestled well most of the day Saturday as well but not as good as we were capable of. We had some mental let downs on Saturday and those are just not acceptable, especially during this part of the season.”
In the finals, the Knights’ Michael Jensen, who is currently second-ranked in Class 1A at 145 pounds, met the top-ranked and two-time State Champion Clay Welter of Don Bosco.
Welter took Jensen down four times in the match on his way to defeating the Knight grappler by an 8-4 decision to give Jensen the runner-up honor.
To earn the shot at the finals, Jensen pinned Daniel Bramle of Aurelia-Galva-Holstein/Schaller Crestland in :46 and then pinned Austin McCartan of Emmetsburg/AR/Ra in :32 before defeating Tanner Bengford of OA/BC-IG in a 14-6 major decision.
The Knights’ Nate Howard would place fourth at 189 pounds after he defeated Matt Streit of Prairie Valley by fall in 1:13 and then gained revenge over Jake Morris of Emmetsburg/AR/RA by an 8-5 decision. Howard then lost a 3-2 decision to Taylor Kettman of Don Bosco.
But after winning his first consolation match, Howard was disqualified in the third-place match with Morris after being penalized for stalling five times in the match.
At 112 pounds, Austin Thompson earned sixth place finish. Thompson opened with 15-0 Technical Fall over Austin Sadler of OA/BC-IG, but lost a 5-3 overtime decision to Nathan Ryan of Woodbury Central. Thompson came back with a 2:27 win by fall over Cameron Arnold of Okoboji, and earned an 18-5 major decision over Corey Becker of Kingsley-Pierson, but was decisioned 6-2 by Chase Goodman of Rockwell City-Lytton/Souther Cal.
