G/T?Squads Sweep Ventura
GRAETTINGER – It was a sweep for the Graettinger/Terril basketball teams over Ventura on Friday night. The Knight girls came away with a thrilling, 38-37 win over the Lady Vikes while the Knights hammered Ventura in a 39-17 win.
For the girls, the game came down to a final possession for the Lady Knights with time running out. A feed by Dakota Hovinga to Tiffany Harris would be the shot GT needed to tally the win.
The Knights led 14-5 after the first quarter and 20-12 at the break, but Ventura came back for a 28-26 lead at the end of three before the Knights would get the one point win.
Tasha Neilson led the Knights with 16 points, while Morgan Matthews added 10. Dakota Hovinga and Amanda Oleson both had four points, while Lindsay Flaharty added two points, as did Tiffany Harris with her game-winning bucket.
“The girls played with great effort for the entire game,” said Head Coach Roger Conway. “I felt we got strong play from our bench. It took a total team effort to earn the win against a good Ventura club.”
It was the same outcome with a little different story line for the Knights in the boys matchup. Graettinger/Terril held Ventura to one point in the entire first half of the game, leading 15-1 after one quarter and 21-1 at the halftime break as the G/T defense could do no wrong.
Ventura would get some offense in the second half of the game, but they only added three points to their tally in the third quarter to trail 29-4 going into the final quarter. The Vikings would outscore G/T 13-10 in the final period, but it was too little too late as the Knights cruised to the win.
Beau Craig led the scoring with 13, and was followed by Colin Leiting with eight and Cody Chapman with seven. Eric Hatland had four points, while Mitch Girres added three and Cody Dyhrkopp and Jesse Nissen both added two points.
“We got off to a great start,” said G/T coach Brent Dyhrkopp. “We really hustled and played hard. On offense we made some great passes for inside baskets. Ventura just had a tough time shooting the ball.”
G/T returns to action tonight (Tuesday) as they travel to Laurens.
