E’Hawk Grapplers Improve With League Victories
With a pair of victories over Storm Lake and Spirit Lake Park on Tuesday, the Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire E’Hawks improved to 6-2 in Lakes Conference wrestling and 11-2 overall.
However, the E’Hawks remain busy with a double dual tonight (Thursday) with Manson Northwest Webster and Rockwell City-Lytton in Emmetsburg.
The E’Hawks opened against Storm Lake at 119 pounds with Isaac Lundgren earning a 1:36 win by fall over Sergio Lorez. At 125, Nick Schany earned a 1:26 win by fall over Kamsa Thephavong before Brady Bailey was pinned in 1:57 of the 130 pound match with Juan Torres.
At 135, Skyler Rice would earn a 2:47 win by fall over James Russell, but Grant Rehan was pinned in 1:23 by Zach Glassford at 140 to make the score 18-12.
Austin McCartan earned a 3:03 win by fall over Ivan Alvorez at 145 and at 152, Andrew Wellik pinned Paco Vasquez in 1:22 of their match. The E’Hawks’ Joey Naig received a forfeit at 160 and the E’Hawks forfeited 171 pounds to KJ?Besch.
Jake Morris went on to earn a 13-5 major decision over Jake Larson in the first full match of the dual. Tayler Wegner, wrestling in his first varsity match at 215 pounds, was the victim of a pin in :53 of his match with Michael Eades and at 285, Andrew Garrelts was pinned in 3:06 of the match with Eric Carillo.
At 103 pounds, the E’Hawks got a 1:57 win by fall from Tyler Leuer over Dylan Tornabane for a 46-30 score, but at 112, Nick Merwald was the victim of a 5:09 pin by Juan Figueroa for the 46-36 final team score.
In the lone junior varsity match, Christ Krug earned a 13-3 major decision win over Isaac Dressler.
Against Spirit Lake Park, the E’Hawks opened with a forfeit win for Nick Schany at 125 pounds. At 130, Brady Bailey earned a 5-3 decision victory over Dillon Bryce and at 135, Skyler Rice tallied a 7-1 decision over Mark Norland.
Grant Rehan was pinned in :40 of his 140 pound match with Rick Maris, but at 145, Austin McCartan claimed a 1:37 win by fall over Casey Jones for an 18-6 E’Hawk lead.
The lead would grow quickly, as Andrew Wellik picked up a 1:50 win by fall over Brandon Griffin at 152 and at 160, Joey Naig pinned Andrew Broucks in 1:59 of their match for a 30-6 advantage.
The E’Hawks welcomed Howard Henkelvig back into the lineup at 171 pounds and got one of the most action-packed matches of the night. Henkelvig and Richard Wilson dueled back and forth into the final period, when Wilson caught Henkelvig and scored a win by fall over the E’Hawk in 4:03 of the match.
Jake Morris came back at 189 to pin Ty Ahrenstorff in 1:46 before Tayler Wegner was pinned in 2:16 by Adam Dreeszen in the 215 pound match. Andrew Garrelts fell victim to a 1:12 pin by Shae Heinrichs at 285 for the 36-24 score.
Needing at least a decision in one of the final three matches to earn the win, the E’Hawks iced the dual when Tyler Leuer pinned Sam Bosma in the 3:15 of the 103 pound mach for a 42-24 advantage.
Nick Merwald was pined in 3:25 of his match with Andrew Brevik at 112, but at 119, Isaac Lundgren earned a 1:21 win by fall over Skyler Hartwig for the 48-30 final margin of victory.
In two junior varsity matches with Spirit Lake Park, the E’Hawks got a 6-2 decision victory from Mitch Peterson in the 145 pound match with JAcob Welch, but at 215, Chris Krug was pinned in 3:18 of his match with Ben Ashland.
After hosting Manson Northwest Webster and Rockwell City-Lytton/ Southern Cal on Thursday, the E’Hawks will journey east on Saturday for the Osage Team Duals. Action starts at 11 a.m. on ?Saturday in Osage.
