E’Hawks Finish Second At Mason City Duals

MASON?CITY?- Getting back into the swing of wrestling action on Saturday, the E’Hawks of Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire came up with a second place finish in the Mason City Duals. The E’Hawks finished their outing with a 2-1 record, falling to the host Mohawks of Mason City, while defeating Lake Mills-Northwood-Kensett (LMNK) and Central Springs.

The E’Hawks opened Saturday’s action with a dual against Central Springs, and claimed a 44-30 victory over the Panthers.

Starting at 135 pounds, E’Hawk Skyler Rice claimed a :29 win by fall over Jake Lister, but at 140, Jake Stubbs was pinned in 1:34 of his match with Spencer Boyd. Austin McCartan would square off with Chris Smith in action at 145 pounds, but earned ?5:47 win by fall to put the E’Hawks up by a 12-6 tally.

At 152 pounds, Andrew Wellik had a battle on his hands with Dylan Miller, and came away with an 8-6 decision victory over his Central Springs opponent. Joey Naig would earn a fall in 3:11 over Gary Garcit for the E’Hawks, before Emmetsburg/AR/RA forfeited at 171 pounds.

Jake Morris would earn a 7-2 decision victory over Andrew Nodvedt in action at 189 pounds, but the E’Hawks would end up forfeiting at 215 pounds, only o see Andrew Garrelts receive a forfeit victory at 285 pounds for the 30-18 E’Hawk advantage.

In action at 103 pounds, Tyler Leuer would lead through his match with Sean Pua, but at the start of the third period, the official gave a point to Pua for a technical violation, as Leuer was not wearing a mouth guard in accordance with participant safety rules.

Leuer was unable to get a mouth guard in the injury time-out period, and was forced to injury default to Pua.

After the setback, the E’Hawks’ Nick Merwald was pinned in :37 of his match with Michale Faught. But at 112 pounds, but at 119 pounds, Isaac Lundgren earned a 2:00 win by fall over Colon Kisner.

Holding a 36-30 lead over the Panthers, the E’Hawks sent Nick Schany to the mat to meet up with Jesse Lambert. Schany and Lambert went back and forth before the E’Hawk freshman earned an 11-7 decision victory for his team.

In the final match of the dual at 130 pounds, Brady Bailey would earn a 15-0 Technical Fall over Jake Webb to give th E’Hawks the 44-30 final margin of victory.

For their second dual, the E’Hawks took on Mason City. Jake Stubbs opened the dual at 140 pounds by earning a 15-12 decision over Colton Schlie. At 145 pounds, Austin McCartan needed just 1:35 to pin Dillon Cole, but at 152, Andrew Wellik ran afoul of Max Krieger, and lost a 19-7 major decision to the Mohawk wrestler.

Joey Naig would claim a 22-9 major decision victory over Jordan Flaherty in action at 160 pounds, but the E’Hawks would forfeit the 171 pound match to the Mohawks.

Jake Morris would meet up with Jared Bartel in the 189 pound match which would see the two wrestlers end up in overtime after ending regulation at 6-6. Bartel would score the takedown for the 8-6 victory over Morris.

Emmetsburg/AR/RA would forfeit the 215 pound match and at 285, Andrew Garrelts was pinned in 2:37 by Clint Kriger.

With Mason City leading by a 25-13 margin, Tyler Leuer earned a 1:28 win by fall over Matt Tornquist at 103 pounds to cut the deficit to 25-19, but that was all the closer the E’Hawks would be able to come.

At 112, Nick Merwald was pinned in 1:47 by Cody King, and at 119, Isaac Lundgren lost a hard-fought dual to Blake Spotts by a 2-0 tally.

Nick Schany came up short in a 7-3 decision at the hands of Parker Sturges at 125 pounds and Tim Rickard scored a 16-5 major decision win over Brady Bailey at 130 pounds. Skyler Rice would claim the last match, however, as he pinned Valentine Flores in 3:16 of the 135 pound match for the 25-41 final score.

For the final dual of the afternoon, the E’Hawks met Lake Mills Northwood Kensett (LMNK) and claimed a 39-36 win.

Starting at 145, Austin McCartan was pinned in 1:45 by Isaac Buffington and Andrew Wellik lost a 7-2 decision to Royce Byrnes at 152. Joey Naig pinned Ben Irons in 1:02 at 160 before the E’Hawks forfeited at 171.

Jake Morris scored a :31 win by fall over Josh Perez at 189, but the E’Hawks forfeited at 215 before Andrew Garrelts was pinned in 2:19 by Jake Brekken in the 285 pound match.

At 103, Tyler Leuer pinned Logan Butler in 1:50 for the E’Hawks but Nick Merwald was pinned in 1:16 by Cameron Batton at 112.

Isaac Lundgren scored a win by forfeit at 119 and at 125, Nick Schany won an 8-4 decision over Andy Dahle. Brady Bailey lost a 5-0 decision to Junior Gallardo at 130, but at 135, Skyler Rice earned a :57 win by fall over Spencer Capitani before Jake Stubbs iced the win with a 3:43 win by fall over Calvin Beal in the 140 pound match.

Coach Marc Harwood’s E’Hawks have a full plate this week, as they travel to Spirit Lake tonight (Tuesday) for a makeup Lakes Conference Double Dual with Storm Lake and Spirit Lake Park.

Then on Thursday, the E’Hawks will host Rockwell City-Lytton and Manson Northwest Webster in a double dual in the Emmetsburg High School gym.

To cap the week off, the E’Hawks will travel to Osage on Saturday, Jan. 16, to wrestle in the Osage Duals.
