By Staff | Jan 8, 2010

STORM?LAKE – The second half of the basketball season started out with a loss for the Emmetsburg Lady E’Hawks, as they fell 58-27 to Storm Lake on Tuesday night. The setback drops Emmetsburg to 0-6 in the Lakes Conference and 1-8 overall on the year.

A rugged defense by the Tornadoes was tough to overcome for the Lady E’Hawks, as they trailed 16-9 after the first quarter of play and 26-13 at the intermission. Emmetsburg continued to struggle against Storm Lake’s pressure in the second half, as they scored just four points in the third quarter to trail 42-17 going into the final frame, but added 10 points to their tally for the 58-27 final.

Paige Naig earned a double-double for the Lady E’Hawks, leading the offensive efforts with 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on the defensive end of the court. Nicole Leuer added four points to the coffers. Jusine Kummer added three points, with Kaity Degen scoring two points. Maddison Woodruff and Aly Berven both converted free throws for one point each in the effort.

Defensively, Justine Kummer collected six rebounds, while Kaity Degen grabbed five boards and Nicole Leuer collected four boards. Justine Kummer and Paige Naig both blocked one shot each, while Kummer had a steal. Nicole Leuer and Kaity Degen both handed out two assists each in the contest.

Emmetsburg has little chance to regroup as they are slated to host the Cougars of Manson Northwest Webster in a non-conference contest tonight (Thursday), weather permitting.

Then on Friday, Emmetsburg resumes action in the Lakes Conference when they make the long road journey to the west to take on the Wolfpack of Hull Western Christian High School.
