E’Hawks Split Lakes Conference Dual At Hull

HULL – The E’Hawk wrestlers of Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire earned a split in their final Lakes Conference double dual of 2009 Thursday night. The E’Hawks manhandled Western Christian by a 55-21 tally, but were edged by Spencer 38-32. The split gives Coach Marc Harwood’s squad a mark of 2-1 in Lakes Conference matches and 5-1 overall.

Against Western Christian, the E’Hawks opened at 285 pounds with Andrew Garrelts being pinned in :18 by Trevor VandenTop. Nick Merwald then earned a win by forfeit at 103 and Tyler Leuer was pinned in 1:08 by Jon Grevengood at 112 pounds.

At 119, Justin Studer received a win by forfeit, but at 125, Nick Schany pinned Matt DeWild in :58 of the match. The E’Hawks got three straight forfeit wins, as Brady Bailer at 130, Skyler Rice at 135 and Jake Stubbs at 140 all got the free match wins.

Austin McCartan earned a 4-3 decision win over Chris VandeWeerd at 145 and at 152, Andrew Wellik received a win by forfeit.

Joey Naig tallied a 16-4 major decision over Kyle Westra at 160 and at 171, Howard Henkelvig was edged in a 7-6 decision loss by Ross Hoksbergen. Jake Morris would receive a win by forfeit at 189 and at 215 pounds, Chris Krug was pinned in 1:08 by Sam VanGinkel for the 55-21 tally.

Squaring off against Spencer, Tyler Leuer got the ball rolling with a :51 win by fall over Bailey Hawn at 103 pounds and at 112, Nick Merwald earned a 5:09 win by fall over Nick Discher. Justin Studer would lose his 119 pound match in a fall at the 4:49 mar to John Christopherson, but at 125, Nick Schany earned a 5-4 decision win over D.J. Todd to give the E’Hawks a 15-6 lead.

Brady Bailey was pinned in :38 of his 130 pound match with Tanner Schaefer and Brock Storm managed to claim a 5-1 decision win over Skyler Rice to tie the dual at 15-15 following the 135 pound match.

Jake Stubbs battled hard against James Randall at 140 pounds, but Randall would end up claiming a 24-6 technical fall over Stubbs in 5:52 of the match to put the Tigers ahead, 20-15.

Andrew Wellik would earn an 8-6 decision win at 145 over Jack Randall to close the score to 18-20, but the E’Hawks forfeited their 152 pound match to Spencer’s Matt Wilkerson that gave the Tigers a 26-18 lead.

Joey Naig would match up with Tyler Schaefer and went on to earn a 24-9 major decision in 5:45 of the 160 pound match.

At 171 pounds, Howard Henkelvig was pinned in 3:06 by Jordan Rasmussen to make the score 32-23, but at 189 pounds, Derek Henkelvig scored a 1:19 win by fall over Ben Roos to close the E’Hawks up to 29-32.

Jake Morris would tie the dual up with an 8-1 decision victory over Kris Rhode for a 32-32 score, but at 285 pounds, Andrew Garrelts was pinned in 2:36 by Nate Benson that would give the Tigers the 38-32 win.

A pair of junior varsity matches were also wrestled by the E’Hawks. Grant Rehan would lose a 13-7 decision to Spencer’s Blaine Johnson while Mitch Peterson would earn a 5:55 win by fall over Western Christian’s Tyler Vander Zwag.

The E’Hawks return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5, when they will travel to Sibley for a make-up double dual with Graettinger/Terril and Sibley-Ocheyedan. The dual is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
