E’Hawks Finish Eighth At Don Miller Invitiational

FORT?DODGE – It was a long, tough day for the Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire wrestling team on Saturday. The competition at the 2009 Don Miller Fort Dodge Invitational was rock-solid, with several ranked wrestlers taking to the mats at Fort Dodge High School.

But when the dust settled, the Emmetsburg/AR/RA E’Hawks finished eighth overall in the team race, but crowned two individual champions in the event.

Skyler Rice captured a title for the E’Hawks at 135 pounds, along with Jake Morris at 189 pounds.

But for senior Joey Naig, the tournament gave him his first match loss of the season in the finals, and forced him to settle for second place honors.

The E’Hawks also got fourth place finishes from Tyler Leuer, Nick Schany and Andrew Wellik, while Jake Stubbs earned seventh place and Justin Studer, Mitch Peterson, Howard Henkelvig and Chris Krug all earned eighth place finishes.

At 135 pounds, Skyler Rice opened with a :58 win by fall over JC?Salazar of Bettendorf and then advanced to the finals with a 5-2 decision win over Zeb Wahle of Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

In the championship match, Rice met up with Jarrod Delp of Davenport West and earned a 9-7 decision win for the title.

Jake Morris opened his quest for the 189 pound title by receiving a first round bye and then scored a 1:24 win by fall over Ben Schnurr of Fort Dodge in the semi-finals. For the finals match, Morris squared off against Nathan Lubinus of Ames, but needed just :16 to pin the Little Cyclone wrestler and claim the championship.

For Joey Naig, the day started with a 1:10 win by fall over Cody Crouch of Webster City. Moving into the semi-finals, Naig earned a 6-1 decision victory over Kyle Putnam of Council Bluffs Lewis Central to advance to the finals match at 160 against Joey Trizzino of Bettendorf. That matchup saw Trizzino stymie Naig’s offense until late in the match on his way to winning an 11-6 decision over the E’Hawk, giving Naig his first loss of the season and second place finish at 160 pounds.

At 103 pounds, freshman Tyler Leuer opened the tournament with a 22-5 technical fall in 5:18 of his match with Jeremy Bennett of Sioux City East. Moving into the semi-finals, Leuer was pinned by Matt Birnbaum of Fort Dodge in :33 and dropped into the consolation round. Leuer would pin Tyler Hoth of Davenport West in 1:48 of their match, and in the consolation final, Leuer would be edged by his first round opponent, Jeremy Bennett of Sioux City East, losing a 6-5 decision to settle for a fourth place finish.

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Nick Schany started his day losing a n 18-3 Technical Fall in 4:33 of his first round match with Tyler Patten of Webster City. Moving into the consolation bracket, Schany got a first round bye before meeting Julian Ysquiero of Sioux City East, Nick Schany would go to take a 9-1 major decision over Ysquiero in the consolation semi-final before meeting Derek Jenkins of Council Bluffs Lewis Central in the consolation final. Jenkins would defeat Schany in an 11-5 decision to give Schany a fourth place finish at 125.

Andrew Wellik would lose his first round match against Bryan Levsen of Bettendorf in 1:50 and moved to the consolation brackets, where he decisioned Steven Schlegel of Davenport West, 4-0, before earning a 4:41 win by fall over Klint Forristall of Council Bluffs Lewis Central. In the consi final, Wellik was pinned in 2:10 by Bryan Levsen of Bettendorf to settle for the fourth place finish at a152 pounds.

For Jake Stubbs, the road was a little longer, as he was forced to wrestle a pigtail match to get into the tourney at 140 pounds. Stubbs won the pigtail match with a 4:34 win by fall over Nick Mayberry of Ames, but lost an 18-2 Technical Fall in 3:58 to Dominic Chase of Bettendorf. Stubbs then lost a 19-8 major decision to Eric Tolle of Webster City, but would earn a 2:34 win by fall over Grant Thompson of Davenport West to finish in seventh place for the E’Hawks at 140.

At 119 pounds, Justin Studer was pinned in the opening round in 3:31 of his match with Tyler McWilliams of Sioux City East. Studer then lost by a 5:21 fall to Fort Dodge’s Monty Arends, and moving into the seventh place match, Studer would come up short in a 14-4 major decision loss to Rony Goodale of Bettendorf to settle for eighth place.

Brady Bailey was the victim of a 1:46 pin loss at the hands of David Lewis of Bettendorf in the opening round at 130 pounds, and then was pinned in 3:26 by Bryce Lightener of Davenport West. Moving into the seventh place match, Bailey lost ta 2-0 decision to Blake Tish of Newton to finish in eighth place.

Mitch Peterson was pinned in 3:01 of his first-round match with Luke Swalla of Ames, and then was the victim of a 10-2 major decision at the hands of Ben Schwery of Council Bluffs Lincoln Central. Wrestling for seventh place, Peterson was pinned in 5:05 of Steven Hanson of Newton to receive eighth place.

At 171 pounds, Howard Henkelvig lost his first round match in a 9-1 major decision to Bobby Bradham of Sioux City East, and then lost a 6-4 overtime decision to Garrett Johnson of Webster City. Henkelvig would then face Connor Morain of Fort Dodge in the seventh place match, where he was pinned in 1:11 by Morain to finish eighth.

The E’Hawks Chris Krug was pinned in 1:23 by Tim Stephens of Sioux City East and in 2:21 by Kyle Beal of Davenport West before falling in 4:59 of the seventh place match at the hands of Kit Paper of Webster City to finish eighth.
