POCAHONTAS – The 2009-2010 roundball campaign opened on a positive note for Coach Mike Brennan and the Emmetsburg E’Hawks Monday night. The E’Hawks collected a 56-30 win over Pocahontas Area-Pomeroy-Palmer at Pocathontas.

“I was very pleased with how we played for the first game of the season,”?noted E’Hawk mentor Mike Brennan. “The defense played very well, especially in the second half, and we had very balanced scoring. Anytime you have five guys who are that balanced in scoring, good things are going to happen for you.”

Emmetsburg came out on Monday and took a slim 10-8 lead at the end of one quarter and extended the advantage to 19-16 at the break. But in the second half, the defense came on hard, holding the Indians to eight points in the third quarter while the E’Hawks added 18 points to their coffers for a 37-24 advantage to start the final frame. Emmetsburg would go on to add another 18 points while limiting the Indians to six points in the final stanza to take the 56-30 victory.

Nick Wuebker would lead the E’Hawks with 12 points, while Kyle Elbert, Tommy Kuecker and Cory Schultes would each add nine points to the effort. Nate Brown chipped in eight points and Ryan Kliegl added six points to the effort.

Tommy Kuecker would grab 10 rebounds, while Ryan Kliegl and Bobby Gappa both had five assists.

Emmetsburg takes the rest of the week off and returns to action on Monday, Dec. 7 when they host Armstrong-Ringsted.
