Raider Girls Fall In Season Openers

RUTHVEN – The basketball season started off on a down note for the Ruthven-Ayrshire girls last week with a pair of losses. On Monday, Nov. 23, the Raiders fell to Laurens-Marathon by a 22-17 score at Laurens, and then fell to Spalding Catholic of Granville by a 59-30 margin on Tuesday night in Ruthven.

Monday’s season opener was a low-scoring affair, with the Raiders tallying just eight points in the first half of action and adding nine points in the second half for the 17-22 final tally.

Ruthven-Ayrshire was led in the effort by Caitlyn Reed with seven points, while Sadie Forey added six points. Keely Williamson and Megan Wichman would both add two points each to round out the scoring.

Sadie Forey would collect 14 rebounds for the Raiders, while Keely Williamson dished out four assists. Caitlyn Reed added a pair of steals to the effort and Sadie Forey had a block.

The Raiders returned home the next night to meet up with Spalding Catholic but came up on the wrong end of the 59-30 final score. Spalding jumped out to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter, and slipped out to a 30-17 lead at the intermission. Ruthven-Ayrshire struggled to hit their offense in the third quarter as Spalding slipped away to a 47-21 lead to start the final quarter before the game ended in the 59-30 final score.

For Ruthven-Ayrshire, Sadie Forey would lead the offense with 20 points, while Caitlyn Reed accounted for the remaining 10 points in the contest. Sadie Forey pulled down nine rebounds, while Caitlyn Reed collected seven boards, while Shyanne Zaragoza had two rebounds. Megan Wichman and Katie Grandstaff both added a rebound each to the effort.

Keely Williamson handed out four assists, while Megan Wichman had three helpers. Caitlyn Reed made two assists and Sadie Forey had one helper. Keely Williamson would make three steals and Shyanne Zaragoza had two steals, while Forey, Reed and Grandstaff all made one theft. Sadie Forey would also block one shot in the contest.

The Raiders will host Armstrong-Ringsted tonight (Tuesday) in a boy-girl doubleheader and travel to Lake Park Friday for a doubleheader with Harris-Lake Park.
