Lady Wolverines Split Season Opening Games

WEST?BEND – The basketball season opened with a split for the West Bend-Mallard Lady Wolverines. On Monday, Nov. 23, the Lady Wolverines fell in a hard-fought game to North Iowa by a 40-37 tally, but the following night at Laurense, West Bend-Mallard claimed a 46-41 win over the Chargers for a 1-1 mark on the young season.

In Monday’s season opener, the Lady Wolverines took an early 15-9 lead after one quarter and led 21-18 at the intermission. The Lady Wolverines contiued to lead in the third quarter by a 28-24 margin, but in the final frame, North Iowa would outscore the Lady Wolverines 16-9 to take the 40-37 win over the purple and gold.

For West Bend-Mallard, Jessica Fehr led the scoring with 11 points, while Amanda Frieden had eight points and Melissa Abrahamson chipped in six points. Carrie Hefty and Heidi Zaugg both scored two points, while Erica Fehr and Kara Vanderhorst both had one point.

Amanda Frieden crashed the boards for 14 rebounds, while Heidi Zaugg added eight boards and Melissa Abrahamson had six carroms. Carrie Hefty blocked two shots in the winning effort.

Against Laurens-Marathon on Tuesday, the Lady Wolverines would tally 21 points in the first half, and then added 24 points in the second half to earn the 46-41 win over the Chargers.

Jessica Fehr led the offense with 15 points while Amanda Frieden added 13 points. Melissa Abrahamson came away with nine points and Kara Vanderhorst added five points.

Once again, Amanda Frieden hit the glass with 12 boards, while Melissa Abrahamson added eight boards. Heidi Zaugg added six carroms, with Kara Vanderhorst grabbing five boards. Erica and Jessica Fehr both added four boards to the effort.

Amanda Frieden made four steals and handed out four steals in the winning effort.

West Bend-Mallard travels to Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka tonight (Tuesday) for a girl-boy doubleheader, and then return home on Thursday night to host Rockwell City-Lytton in a doubleheader and then host Twin River Valley on Friday night in doubleheader action.
