Knights Steamroll Over Woodbine, Rematch With Eagles Is Next

By Staff | Nov 3, 2009

WOODBINE – Wednesday night’s Eight-man substate game between the Knights of Graettinger/Terril and Woodbine turned into a bit of an exhibition game for the Knights, as they demolished Woodbine by a 62-25 score. The lopsided win advanced the Knights into the first round of playoff action Monday night. However, the matchup was with an old foe, as Graettinger/Terril traveled to Swea City to meet up with the Eagles of North Sentral Kossuth.

Monday’s game would be a rematch of the District champion Eagles and the third-place Knights, as North Sentral Kossuth won the regular season meeting by a 38-22 score.

After making the 142 mile trek down to Woodbine on Wednesday, the Knights had no trouble coming out ready to play. After holding the Tigers on their first possession, the Knights opened the scoring derby in a big way.

Nate Howard broke the goosegg on the scoreboard with 7:28 to go in the first quarter as he took a handoff from quarterback Cody Dyhrkopp and raced 75 yards for the first touchdown. Eric Hatland posted the Point After Touchdown kick for a quick 7-0 lead for the Knights.

After a three and out for Woodbine, Graettinger/Terril got the ball back and this time, it was Dyhrkopp who drew blood, scoring off a 15-yard keeper with 3:15 to go in the quarter.

Just before the first quarter ended, the Knights added one more score, as Nate Howard bounced into the end zone from seven yards away with just :08 to go in the quarter for a 21-0 lead at the end of the frame.

Howard would strike again early in the second quarter, scoring off a 57 yard run for a 27-0 lead, but Woodbine suddenly found some offense, and responded with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter.

Graettinger/Terril wasn’t about to led the Tigers steal the momentum, and quickly added runs of 55 and 26 yards by Nate Howard, and then capped it off with a one-yard plunge by Drew Skattebo to end the first half with a hefty 48-12 advantage over Woodbine.

The continuous clock in the second half shortened the game, but the Knights continued their assault, getting a 48 yard touchdown run from Cody Dyhrkopp.

Woodbine would answer the score by Dyhrkopp for a 54-18 score, but on the resulting kickoff, Nate Howard took the kick and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown and the 62-18 lead to end the third quarter. In the final quarter, the Tigers added a touchdown for the 62-25 final score as the Knights earned the dominating victory.

“The kids really came ready to go and everyone played great-offensively and defensively,” said G/T coach Karlton Hector.

For Graettinger/Terril, Nate Howard had 252 yards on 11 carries while Drew Skattebo carried the ball 19 times for 102 yards and Cody Dyhrkopp added 65 yards on four carries.

“Nate broke the big runs and Drew chipped away,” Hector noted.

Through the airways, Dyhrkopp was completed just one of three passes with one interception and a 20-yard reception by Beau Craig.
