E’Hawks Face Pass-Happy Cardinals

By Staff | Oct 1, 2009

Friday’s Homecoming matchup for the Emmetsburg E’Hawks will feature a bit of a new twist on the season for Emmetsburg. A passing team will invade the confines of Duane Twait Field in the form of the Garner-Hayfield Cardinals.

“They have attempted by far the most passes of any team in our district,”?noted E’Hawk Heach Coach Mike Dunlap. “They operate out of the veer offense, with inside and outside option plays and they will throw the ball alot.”

While the Cardinals are an old, familiar foe to the E’Hawks, the pass defense has not been tested as heavily as it appears it will be on Friday night, according to Dunlap.

“They are a good football team and are very competitive. They lost to St. Eds, St. Ansgar and Lake Mills, but beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The have very good athletes all the way around.”

On defense, the Cardinals will present the E’Hawks with a 4/4 defense that does lots of stunting and blitzing, making it vitally important for the E’Hawks to control the line of scrimmage on both offense and deffense, and get off the ball all night long.

“We are going to have to really play assignment defense on Friday night,”?Dunlap noted. “and, controlling the line of scrimmage will be very, very important.”

Even with the distractions of Homecoming week events, Dunlap and the E’Hawks have been business as usual on the practice field, preparing for Friday’s matchup.

After earning the 31-17 win over St. Edmonds last Friday, the E’Hawks assumed sole possession of the lead in District Two, but they know they cannot rest on their laurels.

“The coaching staff has every confidence in these kids,”?Dunlap reiterated. “They’re working hard in practice and they’re working hard to get better each and every day. We just want to continue to improve our game and our level of play every game.”
