Lady E’Hawks Fall In Opener
The 2009 volleyball season began on a shaky note for Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks as they dropped their season opener 3-0 to Southern Cal. The visiting Mustangs won the match by scores of 25-9, 25-9 and 25-17.
“I thought the girls played flat,” Head Coach Andrea Accola-Sabin said after the match. “We had some great rallies at times, but we did not come out on top.”
As a team, Emmetsburg compleed 32 of 35 serving attempts with just two aces, and made 39 of 48 hits with 12 kills in the match. Chelsey Rouse led the attack at the net with nine of 10 hits and three kills, while Morgan Vlasman added eight of nine hits with four kills.
Nicole Leuer and Paige Naig both had eight of nine hits and a pair of kills to their credit, while Jordan Morris added six of 11 hits with one kill.
At the serving line, Hannah Drost connected on seven of eight attempts, while Hillary Pico connected on six of seven serves and Jordan Morris made six of her six serving attempts. Molli Schmeling made five of five serves with two aces, while Jordan Kerber made four of four serves and Nicole Leuer added four of five service completions.
Defensively, Jordan Morris had a solo block and made one dig, while Nicole Leuer dug out nine shots on the night and Hillary Pico dug out seven shots. Hannah Drost had three digs and handed out six assists, while Jordan Kerber had a dig and three helpers.
Paige Naig had one dig and one assist, while Nikki Schany made two assistt and Molli Schmeling added a dig to the final tally for the Lady E’Hawks.
“We area a young team that simply has to overcome our inexperience in playing at the varsity level,”?Accola-Sabin noted. “We are capable of playing better than this and I?know the girls will learn from this game and improve as the season progresses.”
