The annual battle of the Black and White squads ended up with a 14-7 win for the White team in the Emmetsburg E’Hawk pre-season scrimmage Friday night.

The evening of scrimmaged gave E’Hawk Football fans a chance to see all of the E’Hawk teams, including the freshmen and sophomores, in controlled scrimmage situations on Duane Twait Field.

The varsity scrimmage divided the entire team in half, with the Black offense led by quarterback Cory Schultes and the White offense being led by quarterback Ryan Kliegl.

The Black shirts would get the ball first and drove to the white 29 yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The White squad took over and worked out to the Black 45 before fumbling the ball away. An exchange of possessions would follow as the first quarter came to a scoreless close.

With the White team at their own 45 yard line to start the second quarter, an interception would give the ball back to the Black shirts at the 40.

Schultes would engineer a drive that would cap off with a four-yard run by Tommy Kuecker for the score. Ben McCain would add the conversion kick to put the Black shirts up 7-0 with 5:55 to go in the scrimmage.

The White shirts wouldn’t go away, as on second down, Joey Naig took a handoff and hit the hole for a 75 yard scamper for a touchdown. The conversion kick attempt by Jake Morris was blocked, making the score 7-6.

After a quick three and out by the Black shirts, the White team got the ball back and worked down field once again, and with 1:56 to go, Naig scored off a 20 yard run and Ryan Kliegl ran in the conversion for the 15-7 final score.

The E’Hawks will spend the week tuning and tweaking various aspects of their game before they open the regular season this Friday night by hosting arch-rivals Spencer at Duane Twait Field.

Kickoff for Friday’s non-district tilt will be 7:30 p.m.
