E’Hawks Earn Post-Season Recognitions

The 2009 season was a tough one for the Emmetsburg E’Hawk baseball team, as a young squad struggled to find consistency at times. Finishing the season with an overall mark of 9-14 and 3-10 in the Lakes Conference, Coach Mike Brennan’s E’Hawks placed four players on the 2009 Lakes Conference All Conference Elite Teams, along with two selections to the Northwest Iowa Class 2A All-District Second Team.

Leading the selections for Emmetsburg for the season was senior catcher Bobby Mortenson, who batted .389 for the E’Hawks in conference play, and .409 overall, with 27 hits, 18 runs, 27 RBI’s, eight doubles, one triple and five Home Runs for an on-base percentage of .480. Defensively, Mortenson had 27 putouts with eight assists out of 43 opportunities and committed eight errors, for a defensive percentage of .814.

Senior teammate Taylor Morris was named to a position on the All Conference Second Team for the E’Hawks.

On the mound, Morris made nine appearances and pitched 55 and a third innings, giving up 11 runs for an ERA of 1.39. He recorded five wins against three losses, struck out 97 batters and gave up 28 walks with 35 hits, while hitting 12 batters, which gave his opponents a .167 batting average.

Morris batted .326 in conference play and hit .411 overall, with e0 hits, 26 runs and 21 RBI’s, seven doubles, two triples and five Home Runs for an on-base percentage of .476 for the season. Defensively, Morris mad 65 put outs and assisted on eight out of 81 opportunities, while committing eight errors for a fielding percentage of .901.

Senior Tyler Kliegl earned Honorable Mention honors, along with teammate Tyler Henderson, a junior.

Kliegl pitched 11 games for the E’Hawks for a total of 46 innings, with 27 earned runs for an ERA of 4.11 and went 1-7 with one save. Kliegl struck out 53 batters and walked 34, while surrendering 50 hits and hitting 11 batters for an opponent’s batting average of ;258.

Kliegl hit.342 on the season, with 27 hits, 18 runs and eight RBI’s, along with three doubles and a Home Run for an on-base percentage of .388. Defensively, Kliegl made 44 putouts with 16 assists out of 65 opportunities, while committing five errors for a defensive percentage of .923.

Tyler Henderson hit .352 on the season, with 19 hits and nine runs, along with nine RBI’s, five doubles and one Home Run for an on-base percentage of ;4.70. On defense, Henderson made 11 put outs and 54 assists out of 65 opportunities with no errors for a 1.000 percent fielding average.

The honorees were selected for the various honors by the league coaches. Additionally, Mortenson and Morris were chosen as members of the Class 2A Northwest Iowa All District Team on the basis of their play during the season.

* Cody Ege, a junior pitcher from Cherokee, posted a 5-0 record with a .21 ERA. He pitched 34 innings with 60 strikeouts and 13 walks.

* Matt Koch, a senior pitcher from Cherokee, posted a 4-1 record with a 1.91 ERA. He pitched 33 innings, striking out 63 batters and walking six.

Dan Ridenour, a senior outfielder from Sheldon, batted .456 with 12 RBI

Josh Pollema, a senior outfielder from Western Christian, batted .404 with 13 RBI.

Jay Penning, a senior utility player from LeMars, batted .372 with six RBI. Pitching, he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.86 ERA. He threw 33 1/3 innings with 46 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Mitch Peschon, a sophomore utility player from Spirit Lake, batted .347 with 16 RBI. He also pitched 32 innings with a 1-3 record and a 3.43 ERA. He had 28 strikeouts and eight walks.

Second Team

Brayton Ringsdorf, a junior pitcher from LeMars, had a 4-1 record with 2.36 ERA. He pitched 36 2/3 innings with 42 strikeouts and 21 walks.

Cole Kleinwolterink, a junior catcher from Sheldon, batted .407 with 17 RBI.

Ben Van Kekerix, a senior first baseman from Sheldon, batted .279 with six RBI.

Adam Nilles, a junior infielder from Sheldon, batted 3.62 with 17 RBI.

Alex Arends, a junior pitcher from ELC, batted .350 with 11 RBI.

Taylor Morris, a senior infielder from Emmetsburg, batted .326 with 12 RBI.

Tanner Dowling, a junior outfielder from LeMars, batted .336 with 30 RBI.

Scott Schmidt, a senior outfielder from ELC, batted .380 with four RBI.
