Lady E’Hawks Earn Post Season Honors

The 2009 Softball season will go down in history for the Emmetsburg Lady E’Hawks with lots of positives. The team finished second in Class 2A at the State Tournament, ended the season with a record of 32-6, won the Lakes Conference title outright and placed six members of the Team on the 2009 Lakes Conference All Conference Elite Teams, along with two selections to the Northwest Iowa Class 2A All-District Team.

Coach Travis Birkey was also named the Class 2A Northwest District Coach of the Year in his first year at the helm of the Lady E’Hawk softball program.

Leading the selections for Emmetsburg were unanimous picks Maddison Woodruff and Alex Lock. The junior battery unit had a great year, as Woodruff threw 234 innings and collected an ERA?of 0.72, allowing just 24 earned runs while striking out 426 batters during the year. Woodruff allowed 49 walks, 109 hits, hit one batter and earned awinning percentage of .857. Offensively, Woodruff had 127 at bats with 42 hits, two runs, 19 RBI’s, nine doubles and two Home Runs for a .331 batting average and .341 on-base percentage for the season.

Behind the plate, Lock had 466 changes for put outs and made 448, with 14 assists while committing four errors during the year for a fielding percentage of .991. Offensively, Lock had 118 at bats with 52 hits, scored nine runs, 36 RBI’s, 16 doubles and eight Home Runs to hit .441 on the year with an on-base percentage of .480.

Both Woodruff and Lock were unanimous selections for the Lakes Conference All Conference First Teams by the league coaches. Additionally, the duo were chosen as members of the Class 2A Northwest Iowa All District Team on the basis of their play during the season.

Also earning First Team honors for the Lady E’Hawks was shortstop Nichole Hasbrouck. Hasbrouck had 118 at bats with 37 hits, 23 runs and 27 RBI’s, with 11 doubles, four triples an a Home Run for a .314 hitting percentage and .341 on-base percentage. Defensively, Hasbrouck had 52 put-out opportunities and made 21 outs, with 27 assists and four errors for a .923 defensive percentage.

Emmetsburg was also represented on the All ?Conference Second Team by right fielder Kendall Corley. Corley batted 111 times during the season and had 32 hits with 25 runs and 27 RBI’s, along with 12 doubles, two triples and three Home Runs for a .288 batting average and .319 on-base percentage. Defensively, Corley had nine put out opportunities and made six with two assists and one error for an .889 defensive percentage.

Honorable Mention honors were bestowed upon two more Emmetsburg players, third baseman Jenny Hoch and left fielder Caitlin Wise.

Jenny Hoch had 102 at bats with 30 hits and 24 runs, along with 11 RBI’s, five doubles and a triple for a .294 batting average and .345 on-base percentage. At third base, Hoch had 20 put out chances and made 13 with six assists and one error for a .950 defensive average.

Caitlin Wise batted 107 times with 27 hits, 19 runs and 17 RBI’s, along with six doubles and three Home Runs to hit .252 on the season, with a .310 on-base percentage. In left field, Wise had 17 opportunities with 10 put outs and seven assists for a 1.000 defensive average.
