E’Hawks Split Season Opening Contests
Emmetsburg’s Boys of Summer got off to a rocky start for the 2009 season on Thursday, but rebounded on Friday to even their season at 1-1. After a 12-4 loss to Laurens-Marathon on Thursday, the E’Hawks came back on Friday to defeat Western Christian by a 6-0 tally in Lakes Conference play.
Opening the season by hosting Laurens-Marathon on Thursday, Emmetsburg suffered through a bad third inning that saw the Chargers push nine runs over the plate against the E’Hawks. L-M started the game with a two-run first, but the E’Hawks answered in the bottom of the frame to trail 2-1.
The second inning was scoreless, but in the top of the third, starting pitcher Tyler Kliegl struggled with control as he would end up issuing a total of five walks, a double and a single before leaving the mound. Andy Wuebker came in to end the inning, giving up a pair of doubles, but not before the visitors had taken a 11-1 lead.
The E’Hawks would settle in and play stronger defense as the game continued, and added a run to their tally in the fifth off a single by Tyler Kliegl, who would score off a balk call after reaching third base.
Laurens-Marathon picked up a final run in the top of the seventh inning for a 12-2 tally, but in the bottom of the frame, Emmetsburg rallied to score two runs, as a pair of walks by Tyler Kliegl and Taylor Morris would turn into runs off a double by Bobby Mortenson and a sacrifice fly by Austin Oppenheimer for the 12-4 final score.
Kliegl was charged with the loss, giving up nine runs off just two hits with 10 walks and a pair of strikeouts in two innings. Andy Wuebker would finish the game, going five innings and surrendering two runs off two hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.
For the E’Hawks, Kliegl went two for two at the plate, while Morris and Ryan Kliegl both went one for three. Brady Berkland had a single and Bobby Mortenson added a double.
It was a different story on Friday night as the E’Hawks dominated the Wolfpack of Hull Western Christian. The E’Hawks used a home run shot by Taylor Morris to help take a 6-0 win and Lakes Conference opening victory.
Taylor Morris would go the distance on the hill for Emmetsburg, as he gave up just two hints on the night with no walks, while striking out 17 Wolfpack batters.
Emmetsburg’s offensive attack came from Morris with two of three hits, including a round-tripper over the left field fence. Ryan Kliegl went two for two, while Tyler Klieg and Andy Wuebker both went one for three at the plate.
The E’Hawks will have a full slate ahead of them as they host Spirit Lake tonight (Tuesday) and then travel to Cherokee on Wednesday. On Thursday, the E’Hawks return home to host Okoboji and close out the week on Friday with a road trip for conference action at LeMars.
