Golfers Miss Out On State Tourney Berth

By Staff | May 27, 2009

STORM?LAKE – The hopes of the Emmetsburg E’Hawks for a chance to return to the State Golf Tournament this weekend were dashed last Friday. Emmetsburg placed third in the final team standings with a 330 stroke total to miss out on the trip to state by eight strokes at the 2A District tournament, played at the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake.

For the E’Hawks, the miss on the state tournament qualification was equally disappointing, especially for senior Matt Wellik, who was disqualified, and his score was not used for the team scoring.

After winning the 2A Sectional Tourney on May 15 at Fort Dodge, the E’Hawks had high hopes for a return to the state meet at the Panorama National Golf Course in Panora this weekend, but such would not be the case. Carroll Kuemper would win the District on Friday with a team score of 309, followed by Prairie Valley of Gowrie, who shot a 322 to edge out the E’Hawks.

Emmetsburg senior Tyler Kliegl would lead the E’Hawks on Friday, as he carded rounds of 40 and 39 to shoot a 79, while senior teammate Robbie Myers carded rounds of 39 and 44 to tally an 83. Ben McCain would equal the feat, shooting a 44 and 39 for an 83 as well, while Arthur Heldt turned in rouds of 40 and 45 for an 85 and Matt Ballman rounded out the effort with a 43 and 45 for an 88 stroke total.
