E’Hawks Earn 2A Sectional Title

FORT DODGE – Emmetsburg’s E’Hawk boys golf team started the post season in strong fashion by capturing the Class 2A Sectional Tournament title Friday and earned the right to advance to the 2A District meet this Friday. Coach Tom Hoover’s linksters finished 19 strokes ahead of runner-up Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer. In addition, two members of the E’Hawk squad qualified to advance for medalist individual play at the District meet, which will be played at Lake Creek Country Club outside Storm Lake on Friday, May 22.

Emmetsburg’s Tyler Kliegl would shoot rounds of 37 and a 37 for a 74, but tied with Pocahontas Area’s JD Plantz at 74 for medalist honors. A two-hole playoff ensued, with both golfers tying on the first hole, but on the second hole, Kliegl parred the hole to earn the medal honors. Plantz would finish second, with Alex Helmick of Eagle Grove placing third with a 75. Emmetsburg sophomore Ben McCain carded rounds of 37 ajnd 39 to shoot a 76, good for the fourth and final medalist qualification on Friday.

After the 74 and 76 of Kliegl and McCain, Emmetsburg got rounds of 38 and 41 from Matt Wellik for a 79 and rounds of 38 and 42 from Robbie Myers for an 80. Arthur Heldt shot rounds of 39 and 45 for an 84 stroke total and Matt Ballman carded rounds of 42 and 45 for an 87 stroke total.
