The 24th Annual West Elementary Track and Field Day was filled with lots of cheers, smiles, laughter and a few tears this past Friday. The annual outing for students at West Elementary had to be cut a little short in the afternoon due to approaching rains, but students and families were able to enjoy the spirit of competition and fellowship during the event at Duante Twait Field at the Emmetsburg High School athletic complex.

A special tribute was presented to Mrs. Joan Barber, who has organized and headed up the elementary event for the past 23 years. Barber is retiring from her physical education instructor’s position at West at the conclusion of this school year.

Also recognized on Friday was Mr. Greg Sween, Elementary Guidance Counselor. Sween has assisted at the West Elementary meet for many years, serving as a starter for the events, as well as organizing the competitors for the various races.

The West Elementary Track and Field Day provided the students with opportunities to run in races ranging from the 50 meter to 300 meter dash in the morning, and following a sack lunch over the noon hour, various field events were conducted.

Students were able to participate in the long jump, or activities such as the softball throw, football throw, soccer ball kick and flying disc toss.
