Emmetsburg Golfers Edged by Algona At ELC Triangular

Emmetsburg’s boys golf team were edged in a triangular by just one stroke by Algona , but defeated Estherville Lincoln Central in a match played last Thursday at the Estherville Golf Club.

Algona would slip past Emmetsburg by a 158-159 stroke margin, while Estherville Lincoln Central finished with a 176 stroke total.

Chris Grether of Algona and teammate Brad Hoskins took the medal and runner-up honors on the day. Emmetsburg’s Matt Wellik and Tyler Kliegl tied for third place honors as both E’Hawks shot rounds of 38.

Other scoring for the E’Hawk varsity squad included Robbie Myers with a around of 41, Matt Ballman with a 42, Arthur Heldt with a round of 44 and Ben ?McCain with a round of 45.

In the Junior Varsity competition, Emmetsburg took the top honors, as they shot a 179 stroke total. Algona carded a 184 and Estherville Lincoln Central shot a 197.

Michael Becker of Algona was medalist with a round of 43, while Emmetsburg’s Nate Brown, Eric Pelzer and Tyler Clasing all tied with rounds of 44.

Other E’Hawk Junior Varsity scoring had Justin Kibbie with a round of 47, Austin Bonnstetter with a 51 and Holden Hanson shooting a 77.

Also golfing on Thursday for the E’Hawks were Ryan Kollasch, who shot a 49, Josh Leib with a 57 and Daniel Borchardt with a 72.

After playing in Monday’s Lakes Conference Tournament at Brooks, the E’Hawks will set their sights on Friday’s Class 2A Sectional Tournament at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Emmetsburg will compete at Lakeside against golfers from Clarion-Goldfield, Eagle Grove, Humboldt, Manson Northwest Webster, Pocahontas Area/ Pomeroy-Palmer, Sioux Central and the host Gaels of Fort Dodge St. Edmonds.

First and second place finishers at the Sectional tournament will qualify for the District on Friday, May 22 at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake.
