Area Athletes Recognized At Wartburg

WAVERLY – Several local area athletes have earnied recognition at Wartburg College for their accomplishments.

Jacob Naig of Emmetsburg, a 149 pounder for the Knights’ Wrestling team, was one of four wrestlers selected as Co-Most Valuable Wrestlers at the conclusion of Wartburg’s national championship 2008-09 season at the end-of-the-year awards banquet Sunday, March 29.

Naig, the son of Dallas and Lois Naig, earned a third place finish at 149 in the national tournament.

Additionally, Alex Helmich, the son of Steve and Kathy Helmich of Graettinger, was awarded the Coaches Award for his contributions to the Knight squad for the recently compeleted season. Helmich wrestled at Graettinger/Terril in his prep career.

Another former Graettinger/Terril athlete is enjoying success at Wartburg.

Sophomore pitcher Lexy Determan of Terril is currently 9-0 on the season for Wartburg’s softball team, as she collected the win in a 5-4 win over Coe College on March 29.
