Area Wrestlers Competing At State Tournament
DES?MOINES – Action at the 2009 Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships got underway Wednesday afternoon and a half-dozen local wrestlers are among the competitors. The state meet is being wrestled at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
For the E’Hawks of Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire, three wrestlers opened action at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
At 103 pounds, freshman Isaac Lundgren opened his first state tournament appearance with a matchup against Alex Brown of Hampton-Dumont, a sophomore with a record of 29-3. Lundgren, a freshman, has a record of 32-7 going into the state meet.
The E’Hawks’ 152 pounder, Joey Naig, a junior with a mark of 35-9, faced off against Dakota Friesth of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn (ADM), a junior with a record of 37-5.
Rounding out the state qualifiers for Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire is Jake Morris, a junior, wrestling at 189 pounds. Morris, with a record of 34-8, was paired with Carl Broghammer of West Delaware-Manchester, a seniors with a mark of 36-1.
For the Knights of Graettinger/Terril, three wrestlers opened their state tournament appearance Wednesday night in the Class 1A opening round.
Michael Jensen, a junior wrestling at 145 pounds for the Knights, took a record of 38-4 into his first round match with Vance Ortner of Gilbertville-Don Bosco, a senior with a record of 29-7.
At 189 pounds, G/T senior Jake Hoffman met Bryan Martin, a junior from ?South Hamilton with a 29-6 record in the first round. Hoffman is one of 37 wrestlers in the State Tournament with a perfect record, as he entered the event with a 41-0 mark.
Rounding out the Knights’ qualifiers was heavyweight Kyle Brown, a seniors, with a record of 25-3, as he met senior Jordan Mitchell of Westwood with a record of 22-7.
