MILFORD – Hopes of an extended second-season were dashed solidly Saturday night for Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks. The Okoboji Pioneers took control early in a Class 2A Regional tournament contest and went on to tally a 67-30 win over Emmetsburg.

In a previous meeting with Okoboji, the Lady E’Hawks had fallen to the Pioneers by a similar score and knew what the offensive capabilites of the Pioneers were as they entered Saturday’s game.

The Okoboji girls came out in a full court pressure defense from the opening tip that would cause trouble to the Lady E’Hawks all night long. Emmetsburg would have passes picked off by the quick Okoboji defense and the Pioneers, led by the duo of Landi Hunziker and Miley Hunziker, quickly outscored the Lady E’Hawks two–to-one in the first quarter for a 20-10 lead when the first quarter ended.

Emmetsburg’s offense began to flow better in the second quarter, as Okoboji went cold for a time, allowing the Lady E’Hawks to match the Pioneers bucket for bucket, but still left Emmetsburg looking at an 11 point deficit at the intermission, 30-19.

The Lady E’Hawks refused to concede anything to start the second half, and the defense was able to make some nice stops during the third quarter. However, Okoboji’s defense was also up to the challenge, and limited Emmetsburg to just seven points in the third quarter, as the Pioneers posted a 49-27 lead to start the final quarter.

Emmetsburg continued to battle in the final stanza, but with around 4:00 to go in the game, Coach John Kennedy went to his bench, bringing the reserves into the game to gain some invaluable experience. Okoboji would mimic the effort a couple minutes later, and the Emmetsburg reserves played out the final minutes for the 67-30 final.

For Emmetsburg, Jackie Barnes would play her final game and lead the offense with 15 [points, while Bailee Moore added six points. Paige Naig chipped in four points, while Katelyn Schany came off the bench to add four points as well. Rounding out the scoring was Mollie Smith with a free throw.

For Emmetsburg, the season ended for seniors Jackie Barnes, Mollie Smith, Bailee Moore, Bridget Rouse, Hannah Reichert and Katelyn Schany.
