E’Hawks Come Up Short In Regular Season Finale`
SPIRIT?LAKE – For Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks, the regular season ended on a less than positive note Friday night with a difficult 47-44 loss to Spirit Lake.
There was little time to commiserate as the E’Hawks opened Class 2A Tournament play Monday night on the road when they journeyed to Humboldt to meet the Wildcats.
On Friday, the E’Hawks made the trip to Spirit Lake for the traditional end of the season game and battled the Indians hard all the way through the contest.
Emmetsburg would come out aggressively and battle the Indians evenly, taking a 13-12 lead over their hosts at the end of the first quarter.
It was more of the same during the second quarter of action, with Emmetsburg matching Spirit Lake’s performances offensively, and maintaining their lead at the intermission with a one-point, 24-23 advantage.
The second half promised to be a battle and the expectations were met by both teams. The E’Hawks and the Indians continued to slug it out, matching bucket for bucket, but as the third quarter wound down, Spirit Lake managed to slip out to a slim bucket’s lead of 35-33 to end the third quarter.
The battle continued, bucket for bucket, with Spirit Lake managing to edge out to as many as a half-dozen point lead late in the fourth quarter, but Emmetsburg refused to surrender and continued to fight back. As time wound down, the E’Hawks trailed by three points with less that :10 to go.
A three pointer by Tyler Kliegl rimmed off with :06 to go in the contest and Spirit Lake managed to grab the rebound and hold on to take the 47-44 win.
Emmetsburg got 15 points from Trevor Dettmann and 12 points from both Tyler Kliegl and Nick Wuebker in the effort, while Langston Jones rounded out the E’Hawk scoring efforts in the contest with five points.
