Knights Claim Sectional Title, Qualify Seven For Districts, Advance To 1A Regional Duals

SIOUX?RAPIDS – The Knights of Graettinger/Terril came home from Saturday’s Class 1A Sectional Wrestling Tournament with lots to be proud of.

Not only will the Knights send seven wrestlers to Saturday’s Class 1A?District Tournament at Sioux Center, the Knights will also keep their dual season going tonight (Tuesday) with a Regional Dual matchup in Pocahontas.

Coach Cody Alesch’s Knights crowned five champions on Saturday and also collected two runner-up finishes to qualify for advancement into the District meet this Saturday.

However, Graettinger/Terril also captured the Team Championship, finishing ahead of ?Woodbury Central, to qualify for the 1A Regional Duals tonight (Tuesday) in Pocahontas.

“I thought the guys all put in a hard-fought effort,” noted G/T Head Coach Cody Alesch. “We had a few guys battle back when they got down and a fee guys who just fell short with some very hard-fought third place matches. It was just a great team effort and I was proud of all 14 wrestlers.”

The Knights got titles from James Tatman, Logan Tonderum, Kass Schany, Jake Hoffman and Kyle Brown, while Michael Jensen and Nate Howard finished in second place.

At 112 pounds, James Tatman earned the title with a win over Josh Sager of Alta and improves his season record to 31-1. Logan Tonderum had to battle in each of his matches before taking the title at 135 pounds with a win over Matt Steffen of Kingsley-Pierson. With the title, Tonderum improves to 29-5 on the season.

Kass Schany would earn the title at 160 pounds with Blaine Dammann of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn finishing second. Schany advances to the district with a record of 29-1.

The Knights got a championship from Jake Hoffman, who kept his undefeated season alive with a title at 189 over Clayton King of Lawton-Bronson. Hoffman enters the district meet on Saturday with a 38-0 record.

At heavyweight, Kyle Brown earned the Knights’ final title with a win over Jake Syndergaard of Alta. Brown improves to a mark of 22-3 on the season with the victory at 285 pounds.

At 145 pounds, Graettinger/Terril got a second place finish from Michael Jensen. Jensen would come up short in the finals against Russ Goderbson of Marcus-Metiden-Cleghorn, but advanced to the district by virtue of the runner-up finish. Jensen takes a record of 36-3 into the District meet on Saturday.

The Knights’ other second place finish came at 171 pounds, where Nathan Howard was defeated by Dakota Miller of Lawton-Bronson in the finals match. Howard will take a record of 24-10 into the District as the runner-up from the Sectional tournament.

At 103 pounds, Tyler Dalen would finish in fourth place for the Knights, closing out his season with a mark of 18-15 and at 119, Trent Lundgren would take third place and end the season with a mark of 28-12.

Tyler Manning would finish in fifth place for the Knights at 125 pounds, finishing his season with a mark of 3-15. Heath Marchand finished third at 140 pounds, closing the season with a 17-21 record to his credit.

Rounding out the placings for the Knights at the Sectional Tournament was Josh Anderson, who claimed a fifth place finish at 215 pounds. Anderson closed out his season with a record of 19-17.

For Tuesday night’s Class 1A Regional Dual, the Knights will wreslte Manson-Northwest Webster in the first dual of the night, while the other dual will feature Twin River Valley/West Bend-Mallard in a dual with Woodbury Central. Wrestling begins at 6 p.m. The winners of the two duals will then wrestle to determine the qualifier for the State Dual Team Tournament in Cedar Rapids on Feb. 28.
