The Road To State Opens Saturday For Local Grapplers

The hard work, sacrifice and competition began back in November of last year, and will now come to fruition in the next two weeks for area wrestlers.

The trail to the 2009 Iowa High School Wrestling Championships begins this Saturday with Sectional wrestling tournaments at various sites around the state.

Under the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Wrestling protocol, the first and second place finishers at each Sectional Tournament earn the right to advance to the District tournaments, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14. The first and second place finishers at the District tournaments then earn the right to advance to the State Wrestling Championships, which will run Feb. 18-21 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In addition to the individual tournament in Des Moines, the top teams at each sectional tournament earn the right to compete in Regional Dual Team wrestling on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Teams winning the Regional Duals earn the right to advance to the State Dual Team Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

For the Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire E’Hawks, the Class 2A Sectional Tournament at Algona will be their destination this Saturday, Feb. 7. Along with the E’Hawks, teams competing at the Algona Sectional will include Clear Lake, Estherville Lincoln Central, Forest City, Lake Mills/Northwood-Kensett and Algona.

Sectional qualifiers will advance to the District Tournament on Feb. 14 at Humboldt High School. Other teams who will wrestle at the Humboldt District will include Gilbert, Jefferson-Scranton, Rockwell City-Lytton/Southern Cal, Roland-Story, Webster City and Humboldt.

For the Knights of Graettinger/Terril in Class 1A, the 1A Sectional Tournament will he held at Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids. Participating along with the Knights will be Alta, Hinton, Kingsley-Pierson, Lawton-Bronson, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, Woodbury Central of Moville and Sioux Central’s Rebels.

The qualifiers from the Sioux Central Sectional Tournament will advance to the District tournament on Feb. 14 at Sioux Center.

Other teams who will wrestle at Sioux Center will include Akron-Westfield, Central Lyon, George-Little Rock, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Okoboji, Sioux Center, West Lyon and West Sioux of Hawarden.
