E’Hawks Give Good Effort In Loss At Western Christian
HULL – Despite a 26 point performance by sophomore Nick Wuebker, Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks came up on the wrong end of an 80-51 decision against Western Christian of Hull. The loss gives Emmetsburg a 2-9 mark in the Lakes Conference and 4-9 overall mark as the season begins to wind down.
Emmetsburg rode some solid play by Nick Wuebker in the first half, as the sophomore took the ball to the hole repeatedly over the Western Christian defense, keeping Emmetsburg in the ballgame despite numerous turnovers.
After one quarter of play, th E’Hawks trailed 19-11 and 36-22 at the half-time break.
Western Christian made a change in their defensive assignments during the intermission and switched coverages around denying Wuebker the inside shots he had been getting regularly, but Emmetsburg’s Trevor Dettmann stepped up in the second half to keep the E’Hawks in the game.
Emmetsburg trailed 60-33 at the end of the third quarter and both teams turned the game over to their reserves in the final quarter for the 80-51 final score.
Nick Wuebker had a career night for Emmetsburg, as he scored 26 points in the contest. Trevor Dettmann added 14 points to the effort, while Tyler Kliegl, Cory Schultes and Nate Brown all added three points and Tommy Kuecker had a bucket for two points.
Emmetsburg finished the night hitting seven of 11 free throws and making just two of 10 three-point shots, while connecting on 19 of 35 shots from inside the arc for 54 percent accuracy.
The E’Hawks won the battle on the boards, as they out-rebounded Western Christian by a 25-18 margin. Nick Wuebker collected nine boards, while Trevor Dettmann added six boards to the tally.
Langston Jones was held scoreless but dished out six of the E’Hawks’ 16 assists in the game. Emmetsburg blocked three shots and made four steals in the game, but turned the ball over 22 times, opposed to just six turnovers for the Wolfpack.
Emmetsburg’s next action will be Friday night when they travel to Sheldon to meet the Orabs.
On Monday, Feb. 2, the E’Hawks will travel to Sioux Central in Sioux Rapids for a boys only doubleheader.
