E’Hawk Grapplers Take Pair Of League Duals

SHELDON – After a tough week on the mats, the E’Hawk wrestlers of Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire bounced back to take a pair of Lakes Conference Duals Tuesday night at Sheldon. The E’Hawks defeated Sheldon/South O’Brien by a 34-33 tally and then downed Cherokee by a 52-24 score to improve to 5-1 in Lakes Conference duals and 8-7 overall in duals on the season with a week and a half remaining in the regular season.

The E’Hawks opened action Tuesday night against the Orabs of Sheldon/South O’Brien and fouth tooth and nail through the dual before deciding the outcome in the final match.

Starting at 135, Jordan Cody earned a 17-1 Technical Fall in 2:38 over Jeff Tentinger. Joey Brandenburg followed up with a :55 win by fall over Chris Granstra in the 140 pound match. The E’Hawks forfeited at 145 to Andrew Koehlmoos.

Joey Naig scored an 11-5 decision over Knute Klinker in the 152 pound match but at 160, Ben McCain lost an 8-1 decision to Spencer Tischer. At 171, Howard Henkelvig was the victim of a 5:26 fall to Bruce McWilliams.

At 189, Jake Morris came up with a 7-5 decision victory over Pete Matthews to give the E’Hawks a 17-15 lead over the Orabs.

Adam Leuer would earned a 5:48 win by fall over James Granstra in the 215 pound match, but at heavyweight, Taylor Morris was pinned in 2:37 of his match with Bret Doorenbos.

With the E’Hawks holding a slim, two point, 23-21 lead going into the 103 pound match, Isaac Lundgren came away with a 15-4 major decision win over Justin Bainbridge.

At 112, Justin Studer claimed a 13-0 major decision win over Dillon Logan for a 31-21 lead for the E’Hawks, but things would quickly tighten back up.

Justin Firkins was pinned in 1:01 of his 119 pound match with Hayden Adkins and Matt Weir was pinned in :28 of the 125 pound match by Mike Faust to give the Orabs a 33-31 advantage with one match left.

Jacob Stubbs would square off with Jud Maggert in the 130 pound contest and after going into the final period trailing 4-2, Stubbs reversed the Orab and got back points before taking Maggert down late in the match and grabbing extra back points to take an 11-5 decision that gave the E’Hawks the one-point, 34-33 win over the Orabs.

Against the Braves of Cherokee, the E’Hawks opened with Joey Brandenburg taking a 2:48 win by fall over Tyson English at 140 pounds, but the E’Hawks would forfeit the 145 pound match to Gabe Conley.

At 152, Joey Naig claimed a 12-8 major decision over Calvin?Conley and at 160, Ben McCain was pinned in 1:46 by Patrick Loughlin. Howard Henkelvig was the victim of a fall in 2:57 of his 171 pound match with Tyler Lundsgaard as the Braves took an 18-10 lead over the E’Hawks.

Emmetsburg/AR/RA came back with a vengeance at 189 as Jake Morris needed just :35 to pin Dustin Rosewall, while Adam Leuer claimed an 16-6 major decision victory over Nick Keith. Heavyweight Taylor Morris pinned Miah Back in :36 of their match before the E’Hawks got forfeits to Isaac Lundgren at 103 and Justin Firkins at 112.

With a 38-18 lead in their favor, the E’Hawks got a 7-6 decision win from Justin Studer in action with Rick Weaver at 119 pounds. But at 125, Matt Weir was pinned in 3:24 of an exciting match with Jack Letsche.

Jake Stubbs would receive a win by forfeit at 130 pounds, but at 135, Jordan Cody earned a 17-2 Technical Fall in 3:55 over Zac Anderson for the 52-24 final margin of victory.

The E’Hawks will finish out their Lakes Conference slate of duals tonight (Thursday) when they host Storm Lake and Spirit Lake in Senior Night at the Emmetsburg High School Gym. Wrestling will get underway at 6 p.m. The E’Hawks will then travel to Waterloo on Saturday to take part in the Waterloo West Duals. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The E’Hawks will then wrestle Pocahontas Area-Pomeroy-Palmer and Twin River Valley-West Bend-Mallard on Tuesday night, Jan. 27, at Pocahontas before participating in the Lakes Conference Tournament on Friday, Jan. 30, starting at 5 p.m. at the Spencer High School.
