Lady E’Hawks Fall In Week’s Contests
The first week of action in the New Year was tough for the Lady E’Hawks of Emmetsburg, as they dropped four games after the holiday break.
Emmetsburg was edged in a make-up game with North Sentral Kossuth on Saturday, Jan. 3, by a 44-41 tally. Emmetsburg got off to a good start in the contest, taking a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but North Sentral Kossuth found their shooting touch in the second quarter and managed to catch the Lady E’Hawks and post a 24-21 lead at the intermission.
The Lady E’Hawks struggled in the third frame to get their offense moving, as they were only able to score eight points in the quarter, while North Sentral Kossuth went on to edge out to a 37-29 advantage at the end of the third frame. In the final quarter, Emmetsburg closed the gap, only to come up short at the final buzzer, falling 44-41.
Bailee Moore and Jackie Barnes led Emmetsburg with 10 points each, while Mollie Smith added seven points. Paige Naig chipped in five points and Tiffany Wollum came up with four markers, while Nicole Leuer added a free throw.
Tuesday night the Lady E’Hawks made the road trip to LeMars, where they battled hard but came up short in a 43-36 final. It was a slow start for Emmetsburg, trailing 10-3 after the opening quarter, but the Lady E’Hawks played some good defense in the second quarter and found their shooting to tie the game at 17-17 at the intermission.
The offenses struggled for both teams in the third quarter, as the defenses took the forefront, but it was LeMars that edged out to a 28-26 lead to start the final quarter. In the last frame, Emmetsburg struggled to get the offense to roll the way it wanted, and came up short by a 43-36 margin.
Jackie Barnes would lead Emmetsburg’s effort with 12 points on the night, while Bailee Moore and Nicole Leuer both tallied seven points. Tiffany Wollum and Paige Naig both scord four points and Mollie Smith rounded out the effort with two points.
Thursday night the Lady E’Hawks ran into a buzzsaw at Manson Northwest Webster as they fell by a 75-22 margin to the Lady Cougars. Emmetsburg trailed 16-1 after the first quarter and 41-10 at the intermission before Manson Northwest Webster took a 55-13 lead at the end of the third quarter on its way to the 75-22 final.
Bailee Moore would lead Emmetsburg with nine points, while Tiff Wollum came away with eight points. Jackie Barnes and Katelyn Schany both scored two points and Mollie Smith added a free throw to round of the scoring.
The week ended on Friday night with a contest at Spencer against the Tigers. Emmetsburg would fall to 1-7 in the Lakes Conference and 2-10 on the season.
Spencer jumped out to a 20-6 lead over the Lady E’Hawks in the first quarter and expanded their lead to a 36-11 tally at the half time break. Emmetsburg trailed 58-17 at the end of three quarters before Spencer earned the 66-24 final margin of victory.
For Emmetsburg, Bailee Moore would score seven points to lead the offense, while Mollie Smith and Jackie Barmes both added four points to the effort. Paige Naig and Tiff Wollum each scored three points, while Justine Kummer came off the bench to add two points and Katelyn Schany scored a free throw.
Emmetsburg will play host to Spirit Lake tonight (Tuesday)?to start the second rotation through conference play, weather permitting, before hosting Cherokee on Friday night.
