Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks continued to struggle in Lakes Conference play Friday night after a non-conference win on Thursday evening. The E’hawks defeated Manson Northwest Webster by a 62-32 score on Thursday, but fell to Spencer on Friday night by a 55-47 tally. The split gives the E’Hawks an 0-5 mark in the Lakes Boys standings and a 2-7 overall on the season.

On Thursday night, the E’Hawks gave their best defensive performance of the season, as they held the Cougars to just two points in the third quarter.

The E’Hawks led 16-7 after the first quarter, and then slid out to a 33-14 advantage at the intermission. In the third quarter, the E’Hawk defense allowed just two points, while the offense added 13 points for a 46-16 advantage to start the final frame before taking the 62-32 win.

Nick Wuebker and Trevor Dettmann both scored 16 points in the game, with Langston Jones added 14. Tyler Kliegl scored seven, with Tommy Kuecker returning to the lineup with four points. Justin Schultes had three points and Ryan Kliegl added two points.

It was a tough trip to Spencer on Friday, as the E’Hawks struggled to get their offense running against the quick Spencer defense. But, it was tough going in the first quarter as Spencer took an 8-7 lead to start the second quarter. The E’Hawks trailed 22-17 at the intermission, but in the third quarter, the Tigers pulled out to a 42- 29 advantage.

Emmetsburg would stage a rally midway through the fourth quarter and cut Spencer’s lead to a bucked with less than 4:00 remaining in the contest.

However, the E’Hawk offense would go cold as the Tigers managed to slip back to the 55-47 win.

Nick Wuebker would tally 20 points to lead the E’Hawks, while Trevor Dettmann added 16 points. Tyler Kliegl chipped in four points, while Langston Jones added three points and Tommy Kuecker and Kyle Elbert each added two points to the final effort.

The E’Hawks will return home to host Spirit Lake tonight (Tuesday), weather permitting.
