E’Hawk Grapplers Split Lakes Dual

SPENCER – The Lakes Conference season resumed last Thursday night for the E’Hawk wresters of Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Meeting up with Western Christian of Hull and the Spencer Tigers at the Spencer Fieldhouse, the E’Hawks earned a split, defeating Western Christian by a 66-12 tally, but coming up short to Spencer by a 38-30 tally. The split gives Coach Zach Hamann’s squad a mark of 3-1 in the Lakes mat race and 4-2 overall on the season.

Against Western Christian, wrestling started at 112 pounds with Justin Firkins receiveing a win by forfeit. Justin Studer earned a 17-1 Technical Fall over Matt DeWild in 3:52 of the 119 pound match before Nick Larse, Grant Rehan and Jake Stubbs all received wins by forfeit at 125, 130 and 135 pounds, respectively.

Jordan Cody tallied a 1:16 win by fall over Heraldo Rodriguez in the 140 pound match and at 145, Joey Brandenburg won a 21-4 Technical Fall in 5:00 of his match with Chris VandeWeerd. Joey Naig scored a 16-3 major decision win over Kyle Westra in the 152 pound match to put the E’Hawks up 44-0.

At 160 pounds, Ben McCain was the victim of a 3:08 fall at the hands of Sam Van Ginkel. In the 171 pound match, Howard henkelvig was pinned in 5:10 of his match with Ross Hoksbergen.

The E’Hawks got back on track at 189 where Jake Morris pinned Jesse Eppinga in :59. Adam Leuer received a win by forfeit at 215 pounds and at heavyweight, Taylor Morris pinned Trevor Van Den Top in :41.

Isaac Lundgren scored a 13-3 major decision win over Jonathon Grevengoed in the 103 pound match to give the E’Hawks’ the 66-12 margin of victory.

Against Spencer, Justin Studer would come up short in an 8-5 decision to D.J. Todd at 119 to start the action. The E’Hawks’ forfeited at 125 pounds to Brock Storm and also forfeited at 130 to Evan Quail. At 135, Jake Stubbs squared off with James Randall but lost a 17-2 Technical Fall in 4:10 of the match to put Spencer ahead by a 20-0 margin.

Jordan Cody would score Emmetsburg’s first points with a 2-1 decision victory over Tyler Schaefer in the 140 pound match. At 145, Joey Brandenburg earned a 2:59 win by fall over Charlie Millard, but Joey Naig would lose a 4-0 decision to Matt Wilkerson.

Trailing 23-9, the E’Hawks would see Ben McCain be pinned in :52 by Jjordon Rasmussen at 160 and Howard Henkelvig suffered a similar fate in :51 at the hands of Zach Van Wetterling in the 171 pound match.

Jake Morris would start the E’Hawk rally, as he pinned Sean Elliott in the 189 pound match in 5:06, but at 215, Adam Leuer lost a 3-1 decision to Tyler Kacmarynski off a last-second takedown.

For the heavyweight match, Taylor Morris squared off with Nate Benson and claimed an 8-4 decision victory for the E’Hawks, making the score 38-18.

At 103 pounds, Isaac Lundgren received a win by forfeit from Tigers, and at 112, Justin Studer would score a 2:42 win by fall over Murray Scott to make the final score 38-30.

After an appearance in the Mason City Duals on Saturday, the E’Hawks are off until Thursday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Mason for a double dual with Manson Northwest Webster and Rockwell City-Lytton/Southern Cal. The e’Hawks travel to the Waterloo West Duals on Saturday, Jan. 24.
