Turnovers Hamper E’Hawks In Loss

By Staff | Jan 8, 2009

LeMARS – Turnovers would trip up Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks in a 54-46 loss to LeMars Tuesday night. The E’Hawks welcomed Tommy Kuecker back to the lineup to open the second half of the season, but 20 turnovers would have too much of an effect on the outcome of the contest.

Emmetsburg got off to a slow start, as LeMars took a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the E’Hawks carved away at the lead in the second frame, cutting the deficit to 25-29 at the intermission.

The E’Hawks came out of the locker room and played some solid defense in the third quarter, catching the Bulldogs and actually taking the lead by a bucket at the end of the third, 40-38, but fouls and some untimely turnovers would allow the Bulldogs to make a run at the E’Hawks in the closing minutes to steal the 54-46 final margin.

Trevor Dettmann led Emmetsburg’s efforts with 13 points on the night, while Nick Wuebker added eight points. Tyler Kliegl scored seven points and Langston Jones added six points. Tommy Kuecker, who missed the first portion of the season recuperating from a broken wrist, saw his first action of the season and tallied six points, while Kyle Elbert added four points.

Emmetsburg hit 14 of 38 from inside the arc and made one of seven three’s, along with 13 of 21 free throws.

“We outrebounded LeMars 30-20,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Mike Brennan, “but then we committed 20 turnovers to their 11 and that just killed us.”

The loss drops Emmetsburg to 1-6 overall on the season and 0-5 in Lakes Conference play. The E’Hawks will journey to Manson tonight (Thursday) for a non-conference matchup with Manson Northwest Webster, and then return to Lakes Conference play Friday night with a matchup at Spencer.
