Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks closed out the first half of their season Thursday night in a 62-35 setback to the Pioneers of Okoboji.

For Emmetsburg, the abbreviated first half of the season ends with a mark of 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Lakes Conference girls race.

Emmetsburg started their only game of the week after being weathered out on Tuesday by matching Okoboji almost equally through the first quarter of play on Thursday night. Both clubs struggled to get their offenses to hit and it would be Okoboji taking a slim, two-point lead, 14-12, at the close of the first quarter.

The visiting Pioneers found their defensive game in the second quarter, as they started denying Emmetsburg second shot opportunities and rebounds. At the same time, a tenacious defense by the Pioneers created several untimely turnovers for the Lady E’Hawks, who found themselves trailing Okoboji by a 24-18 tally at the intermission.

Okoboji’s Hunziker twins sparked the team in the second half, as the Lady E’Hawks found it even more difficult to get position inside for any close in shots, with most possessions turning into one shot or no shot at all due to Okboboji’s defense.

In the meantime, Okoboji was hitting lots of shots and getting putbacks that allowed them to slip out to a 52-28 lead at the end of the third quarter. It would be more of the same in the final quarter, as both teams would substitute out to end the contest with Okoboji scoring the 62-35 win.

For Emmetsburg, Tiffany Wollum drained four three-pointers to lead the effort with 15 points. Bailee Moore battled inside for 14 points, while Jackie Barnes added four points and Paige Naig came away with two points in the effort.
