Wolverines Split With WCLT
WEST BEND – The West Bend-Mallard basketball teams earned a split in their games with Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka Tuesday night.
In the girls contest, WCLT took a 57-34 win over the Lady Wolverines. But in the boys’ matchup, the Wolverines posted a 58-26 victory.
West Bend-Mallard trailed 10-5 at the end of the first quarter and 28-12 at the half-time break. WCLT would stretch their lead to a 46-19 margin at the end of the third quarter before posting the 57-34 win.
Coach Eugene Ruppert’s Lady Wolverines were led by the 14 point effort of Kayla Hartman in the loss.
The Wolverines (0-3 overall) were led by Kayla Hartman’s 14 points. Jessica Fehr added five points, while Marisa Thilges, Amanda Frieden and Missy Abrahamson all added three points each to the effort. Carrie Hefty, Erica Fehr and Heidi Zaugg each added two points to the totals.
The Lady Wolverines fall to an 0-3 mark on the young season with the loss.
It was a different outcome in the boys contest, as the Wolverines dominated WCLT for the 58-26 victory in their season opener.
The first quarter was tight, with the Wolverines taking a 9-8 lead. However, West Bend-Mallard edged away from the Tigers in the second quarter, taking a 22-13 lead a the intermission and then stretching the lead to a 48-17 mark at the end of the third quarter before taking the 58-26 final margin of victory.
Senior guard Travis Goeders was the offensive spark on the night, scoring 25 points for the Wolverines.
Jake Goodchild added 11 points, , while Darin Banwart and Matt Ruppert both chipped in eight points each. christ Schmidt and Jon Runchey both scored two points each and Matthias Schwartzkopf added a free throw in the winning effort.
The win gives the Wolverines a 1-0 mark as they prepare to travel to Rockwell City to meet up with Rockwell City-Lytton tonight (Thursday).
