Lady E’Hawks Down Cherokee
CHEROKEE – Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks collected their first win of the season Tuesday night with a 54-45 victory over Cherokee. The win gives Emmetsburg a 1-1 mark in the Lakes Conference and 1-1 overall standing on the young season.
However, the task becomes no easier as Storm Lake will visit this Friday night for a Lakes conference matchup.
It was a slow start for the two teams, as Cherokee’s first seven shots were clean misses, but Emmetsburg struggled out of the box to get the offense moving in the first 4:00 of the contest.
However, a three-ball by Tiffany Wollum would help get things on track as Emmetsburg would post a 7-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second frame, Emmetsburg and Cherokee would trade baskets evenly to post a 16-16 tie at the intermission.
The Lady E’Hawks would edge away from the Braves in the third quarter, taking a seven-point, 35-28 advantage at the end of the third frame. In the final quarter, Emmetsburg was able to maintain a a five point lead through the period and went on to take the 54-45 victory.
Tiffany Wollum would lead all scorers with 21 points on the night, including five three-point field goals. Bailee Moore would follow with 12 markers, while Jackie Barnes added eight points. Maddison Woodruff scored six points, including a three-pointer, while Mollie Smith added five markers and Paige Naig added a bucket for two points.
Mollie Smith would clean the glass for the Lady E’Hawks, pulling down 14 rebounds on the night, while teammate Jackie Barnes took away nine boards and Bailee Moore collected eight boards.
Tiffany Wollum and Mollie Smith both dished out two assists each in the winning effort.
