Flag Football Program Takes Center Stage Under The Lights Saturday

By Staff | Oct 2, 2008

It will be like any other game night. Players will gather, listen to their coaches and will step onto the turf of Duane Twait Field, illuminated by the stadium lights on a crisp, Fall evening.

No, it’s not the scene of a Friday night football encounter, but rather a Saturday Night Under the Lights, featuring over 100 youths who are plaging in the Emmetsburg Recreation Department’s Flag Football program.

After a successful first year of an expanded program, the Emmetsburg Recreation Department further expanded the program this Fall.

With interest in the flag football program on the upswing, a decision was made to further expand the program to Tuesdays, to go along with the Thursday and Saturday sessions.

The program will wrap up this Saturday night with the Second Annual Saturday Night Under The Lights. The first scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m. at Duane Twait Field in Emmetsburg.

Scrimmages will start with the First and Second graders at 6 p.m. From 6:30 pm to 7:15 pm, Third and Fourth Graders will play, followed by the Fifth and Sixth graders from 7:15 p.m. to 8:00 pm.

As part of the family oriented program on Saturday, a beef burger supper with free-will offering will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the high school athletic complex. All proceeds raised through the free-will offering will go to the Flag Football Program.

Serving as coaches this season were Dan Jackson, Chris Jackson, BJ Schany, Scott Wirtz, Kort Freeman, Brent McAllister, Scott Kibbie, Matt Mueller, Rick Brennan, Travis Fries and Troy Auten, as well as Coaches Mike Dunlap and Joe Carter, along with members of the Emmetsburg E’Hawk football team.

Sponsors of the Flag Football program for the 2008 season included Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, Rick Jones – Pronto Car Wash/E’Hawk Inc., Horizons Unlimited-Creative Stitches, Cornerstone Restaurant, Poet Biorefining and Emmetsburg Chiropractic.
