Lady E’Hawks Open Net Campaign With Setback
LAURENS – The new season opened on a down note for the Emmetsburg Lady E’Hawks, as they fell 3-0 to Laurens-Marathon in their first volleyball match of the season. Game scores were 17-25, 17-25 and 17-25.
“This was a tough loss to start the season with,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Andrea Acola-Sabin. “With two weeks of practice, we still have some areas to improve on.”
Overall on the night, Emmetsburg had 92 percent serving, making 48 of 52 with six aces on the night. Mollie Smith had 14 of 15 serves with three aces, while Katie Malm added 11 of 12 serves with an ace and Kayla Herbers had six of seven serves with an ace.
Bailee Moore added seven of eight serves, with Hannah Reichert making five of five serves. Jackie Barnes added three of three serves and Nichole Hasbrouck had two service completions with one ace serve.
The hitting percentage was .063, an area Acola-Sabin says needs to improve. “We need to become more aggressive at the net. We set too many free balls over and let Laurens-Marathon set it up on us.”
The Lady E’Hawks made 67 of 79 spikes with 17 kills. Mollie Smith had 16 of 20 with five kills, while Bailee Moore added 14 of 19 with five kills. Jackie Barnes made 15 of 16 spikes with two kills and Morgan Vlasman was 11 for 11 with a pair of kills.
Kayla Herbers made nine of nine spikes with three kills and Katelyn Schany added two of four spikes.
With 47 digs, the Lady E’Hawks were led by Bailee Moore with 15 digs and Kayla Herbers with 13. Mollie Smith added 10 digs and Hannah Reichert dug out four shots. Jackie Barnes had two digs while Nichole Hasbrouck, Morgan Vlasman and Katie Malm all added a dig each.
Katie Malm dished out nine assists, while Hannah Reichert made three and Kayla Herbers and Jackie Barnes each handed out a helper. Bailee Moore and Kayla Herbers each had a solo block while Jackie Barnes and Morgan Vlasman both assisted on a block.
“The girls are learning my system and I’m learning the girls, so its a gradual process,” Acola-Sabin noted. “There is a lot of potential and the girls are working hard.”
The Lady E’Hawks will be busy next week on the court, as they will open the Lakes Conference season on Monday by hosting LeMars, and then host Pocahontas Area on Tuesday night. Then on Saturday, Sept. 13, the Lady E’Hawks will host their own Invitational Tournament, with Bishop Garrigan, Storm Lake and Graettinger/Terril coming to Emmetsburg for round-robin play.
