Harriers Preparing For Season
When one thinks of the sport of Cross Country, the first image that comes to mind is that of the lone runner, competing against the clock. While the sport is one of individuals, it is also team-based, and this year’s Emmetsburg-Graettinger/Terril E’Hawk Cross Country teams will be able to sport full competitive squads for both boys and girls.
“We’ll be a young squad this year, with just one senior on our roster,” noted Head Coach Dan Dooley. “But, we have some excellent team captains to lead us, and have the advantage of a returning state qualifier as a sophomore to help challenge us for the season.”
The E’Hawks will receive that challenge from sophomore Tacee Leebens, who qualified for the State Cross Country meet in 2007 as a freshman.
Leebens will be counted on for leadership of a squad that features Josh Lieb as the lone senior. Junior team captains will be Blake Schany for the Lady E’Hawks and Jared Janssen for the E’Hawks.
Making up the rest of the Lady E’Hawks are juniors Teanna Leebens and Kilay Dunnick and freshman Tayler Bruns, along with Schany and Tacee Leebens.
For the E’Hawks, junior Josh Kummer enters the lineup, along with sophomore Allen Dunnick and freshman Chad Loomis, in addition to Janssen and Lieb.
The junior high portion of the E’Hawk program will also be strong this year, being led by Erin Reedy. Joining the program at he seventh grade level are Tegan Olson, Hadley Egland, Jenna Wolfe and chelsey Forry.
“We’re really looking forward to the season to see what we can accomplish,” Dooley noted. “Our times to start practices last week were right at what we were running in the district last season, and those were our best times of the year. You have to be optimistic with start like that.”
