Flag Football Program To Expand Again

By Staff | Aug 21, 2008

After a successful season that featured an expansion of the Flag Football program, Emmetsburg Recreation Department Director Mike Dunlap has announced the 2008 edition of the Boys Flag Football program will be expanding again. An additional day of play will be added to this season’s program, which will run from September through October.

The traditional Saturday Flag Football program will be offered to boys in first through sixth grades, running from Sept. 6 through October 4. As in past years, members of the Emmetsburg High School Football team will serve as the coaches for the youth squads in the program.

Last year, a Thursday afternoon/evening session was added to allow additional time for players in third through sixth grades to learn more basic fundamentals of the game.

New to the program this year will be the addition of a Tuesday afternoon/evening session. The Tuesday and Thursday afternoon programs will continue to be offered to boys in grades three through six, and will run from September 9 through October 2. The program will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will be coached by several former E’Hawk players and community residents.

Like last year, the Tuesday and Thursday sessions will be held at the Emmetsburg Catholic School grounds.

The Saturday program will continue to be held on each Saturday morning at the Emmetsburg Middle School Football Field. The primary goal of the flag football program is to teach the basic rules and fundamentals of the game of football.

To start the program, a clinic will be conducted by the Emmetsburg E’Hawk Varsity Football Coaching staff on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at the Middle School Football Field.

The purpose of the Flag Football program remains to teach the basic rules and the fundamentals of football, as well as the promotion of teamwork and sportsmanship for all participants. Each session will feature drills in fundamentals, as well as scrimmage opportunities.

To cap off the Flag Football Program, the Second Annual Saturday Night Under the Lights Event is being planned for Saturday, October 4, under the lights of Duane Twait Field at the Emmetsburg High School.

While a small participation fee is required for participation in the program, all participants will receive an E’Hawk Football stocking hat for their participation.

Participation fees and registration may made to the Emmetsburg Recreation Department at the Emmetsburg City Hall, 2021 Main Street, in Emmetsburg.

Enrollment forms and permission slips must be returned to school or City Hall by Friday, Sept. 5.
