Eleven teams, with 402 swimmers, participated in the AHEELA Conference Swim Meet in Emmetsburg July 26. The swimmers participated in 254 races in the nine hours of the conference meet.

Emmetsburg Penguins had 18 swimmers and finished sixth. Algona won the meet.

Teams participating in the conference are: Emmetsburg, Algona, Cherokee, Laurens, Storm Lake, Forest City, Webster City, Rockwell City, Eagle Grove and Fort Dodge/Humboldt. Communities rotate hosting the conference meet.

“We had kids who cut a lot of time,” said Emmetsburg swim coach Deena Fries. “We did really good.”

With over 400 swimmers, comes coaches, parents, family and friends. Team camps were set up in the green space south of the swimming pool.

“We received comments from parents that the camp space was the best ever,” said Fries.

Space around the pool was expanded with three-tier bleachers. In addition, a big screen television was set up in the air conditioned gymnasium at the Smith Wellness Center. This provided a separate viewing area.

“We’ve seen this done before, but usually it’s on a television. The people seemed to really like the big screen,” Fries reported. “Our thanks go to the Middle School for use of their three-tier bleachers.

Concessions were located in the team camp area. Iowa Lakes Community College food service and Palo Alto County Cattlemen prepared the food. Service was provided by swim team parents and volunteers.

“Since we successfully hosted the conference meet, hopefully we dan set up a sectional meet this winter,” said Fries. “It was really a wonderful day.”
