Butch Brown Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing This Saturday, August 2

By Staff | Jul 29, 2008

Remembering a long-time friend of education and member of the community, the Emmetsburg Lions Club is once again proud to announce the Fifth Annual Butch Brown Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing. The scholarship golf outing is set for next Saturday, August 2, at the Wild Rose Golf Course in Emmetsburg.

“The Emmetsburg Lions are very proud to host this memorial tournament in honor of Butch Brown, especially in tribute to his beliefs in education,” noted Steve Heldt, a member of the golf outing organizing committee. “This tournament helped the Lions Club award five $1,000 scholarships since the tournament started in 2003.”

The idea of a golf outing in memory of Brown is a perfect way to honor the long-time Emmetsburg attorney, who died August 27, 2003, at his home in Emmetsburg. A 1967 graduate of Emmetsburg High School, Mike, or Butch, as he was more commonly known, always held education close to his heart. Brown attended UCLA for his undergraduate studies, and received his law degree from the University of San Diego before returning to Emmetsburg to practice law.

During his years in Emmetsburg, Brown served on the Emmetsburg Community School Board, where he was a supporter of education at all levels. While being a supporter of E’Hawk sports, as well as the UCLA Bruins, Brown always championed academics, believing that students should be challenged academically, and also have the opportunity to attend a challenging college after high school.

“With Butch, the performance of students was always most important,” Heldt recalled. “He loved his sports and all the activities at the school, but it was the academics that were his passion. ACT (American College Testing) scores were very important to him.”

Of course, it goes without saying that Butch Brown also enjoyed the game of golf. His trademark claim “They stole my ball” was guaranteed to elicit a laugh from any player during a round with Butch.

Keeping Brown’s devotion to education alive, along with his memory, is the reason for the Butch Brown Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing.

The outing’s format will be nine-hole, four person best-shot, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Wild Rose clubhouse. Registration for event also includes a ribeye steak sandwich luncheon following the golfing. Numerous prizes will be awarded for various contests including longest drives and putts, and all participants in the event will receive a commemorative gift.

All proceeds from the event go to the Butch Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund at Emmetsburg High School. The scholarship is awarded annually to an Emmetsburg High School senior to aid them as they continue their college education.

“Butch was involved in everything,” Heldt noted. “Vocal and Band Boosters, Athletic Boosters, Little League, everything. Butch loved his community and through this memorial golf outing, we hope to be able to continue to honor his love and support for the community and its future through supporting the education of our young people.”
