Bob McCartan Memorial Triathlon Held Saturday
A field of 101 athletes of all ages registered to compete the Bob McCartan Memorial Sprint Triathlon on Saturday. An Algona man and a Mason City woman took the top honors in the 2008 edition of the event, while a relay team of three Algona men would earn first place in the relay competition of the event, which features a 500 yard swim in Five Island Lake, a 12-mile bicycle ride and a 5 K run.
Stacey Carlson of Algona finished the event to lead the field of 44 male contestants with a tim eo f 1:03.44.
In the womens” competition, a field of 16 women participated, but it was the time of 1:08.43 from Tina Friday of Mason City that took top honors.
In the relay competition, a total of 13 teams took part in the event, with the threesome of Bill Parker, Gregg Winkel and Dan Jacobusse of Algona turning in the winning time of 1:01.22.
