Emmetsburg’s Lady E’Hawks started their 2008 softball season off on the right foot with a 10-0 shutout win over Bishop Garrigan Monday night. Despite unseasonably cool temperatures, Coach Jeny Garst’s girls looked solid in their first game of the year.

With sophomore pitcher Maddison Woodruff leading the attack by throwing a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts against the Golden Bears, Emmetsburg got 10 hits in the slugfest.

Woodruff would surrender two of her three walks to Bishop Garrigan in the first two innings, but struck out five of the eight batters she faced. The Lady E’Hawks managed to come up with base hit in the first, but left two runners stranded and then were sent down in the second frame.

In the third, Woodruff retired Bishop Garrigan in order, before Jenny Hoch walked, and then came around to score off a double by Designated Hitter Janna Hoch for the 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears went down in order in the fourth, and Emmetsburg plated three runs in the bottom of the frame. Kendall Corley would score along with Woodruff’s courtesy runner, Nikki Schany and Morgan Vlasman before leaving Jenny Hoch stranded.

Bishop Garrigan would get a walk in the fifth, but no more and Emmetsburg pushed four runs home in their half of the inning. Janna Hock scored off a double from Alex Lock, and Lock’s courtesy runner, Hillary Pico, would score off a passed ball. Maddison Woodruff rapped out a single and Schany would come home for her off a double by Nicole Hasbrouck, who then scored off a double by Tiff Wollum.

After putting the Golden Bears down in order in the sixth, Emmetsburg put the game away with runs by Janna Hoch and Alex Lock to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Alex Lock had two doubles, while Tiff Wollum and Nicole Hasbrouck both hit doubles`. Jenny Hoch and Maddison Woodruff both had two hits and Janna Hoch had a double and single.
