FOREST CITY – After a 10-0 shutout win on Monday, the Lady E’Hawks of Emmetsburg found themselves on the receiving end of a shutout loss, falling 3-0 to Forest City. The loss gives Emmetsburg a 1-1 mark on the young season.

“We looked OK on Monday, but Tuesday showed we’ve got room for some improvement,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Jeny Garst.

Emmetsburg would struggle to get any kind of sustained offense going in the contest, as they were retired in order in the first three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Lady E’Hawks went down two outs, but got Janna Hoch, the Designated Hitter, on base off an error. Garst put Nikki Schany in as a pinch runner, who was able to advance to second base. Alex Lock drew a walk, but the duo were left waiting when Kendall Corley struck out to end the at bat.

Forest City would plate all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth, using a three walks to load the bases before a pair of base hits would score the runs.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth, Emmetsburg tried to regroup, with Maddison Woodruff getting on base off an error, but being left stranded at first when the side went down in order after that. Emmetsburg’s defense held firm in the bottom of the fifth, retiring Forest City in order.

However, it would be Emmetsburg’s turn to go down in order in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lady E’Hawks returned the favor in the bottom of the frame.

To start the seventh, Emmetsburg led off with Alex Lock getting on base off an error and advancing around to second off Kendall Corley’s walk. The pair would move to scoring positions, only to be left waiting as Woodruff, Mollie Smith and Morgan Vlasman would be struck out to end the game.

Maddison Woodruff took the loss for Emmetsburg, allowing three runs off four hits. Woodruff struck out 10 batters on the night, but issued five walks. Emmetsburg was unable to record a hit in the loss.

After hosting West Hancock on Wednesday, the Lady E’Hawks will host North Sentral Kossuth tonight (Thursday) before opening the Lakes Conference season this Friday night with a trip to LeMars. Emmetsburg will then play on Tuesday, May 27, at Sheldon in Lakes Conference softball action.
