E’Hawks Will Be Well Represented At State

EAGLE GROVE – The E’Hawks of Emmetsburg will be flying over the hurdles at the State Track and Field meet later this week following Class 2A District Track action on Saturday at Eagle Grove. Coach Joe Carter’s thinclads will send two relays and four individual events to the State Championships, which get underway this Thursday, May 15, at the Jim Duncan Track at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

“Despite the rain most of the day, we had some very good times and efforts,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Joe Carter. “Our Shuttle Hurdle improved their time again on t he season in winning, and have the fastest qualifying time for the state meet.”

Indeed, the hurdling events for the E’Hawks panned out well on Saturday, as the quartet of Jake Morris, Jake Vaughan, Trevor Dettmann and Ethan Dykstra, blazed their way to first place with a :58.40 clocking and into the state meet, where they will run at 2 p.m. on Thursday on the blue track at Drake.

Trevor Dettmann would also come away with a first place finish in the 110 High Hurdles, turning in a :14.90 time to qualify for state, while teammate Ethan Dykstra was a tick of the stopwatch behind with a :14.91 time for third place. The two hurdlers will run in preliminary competition at 11:20 a.m. Friday.

Jordan Mathisen earned a return trip to the state meet after he won the shot put on Saturday, throwing 50’1/4“. Mathisen will throw at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday in Des Moines.

The E’Hawks’ Ethan Dykstra will also compete in the 400 meter hurdles at the state meet, as he earned a third place finish with a time of :58.00 and will run at 9:40 a.m. on Friday at the state meet.

Emmetsburg’s 4×200 relay, with the foursome of Bobby Mortenson, Tommy Kuecker, Justin DeFord and Mitch Wagner, earned second place on Saturday, qualifying for state with a time of 1:34.16. The quartet will compete at 10:20 a.m. on Friday.

Rounding out the state qualifiers for the E’Hawks will be Josh Wolfe, who placed third in the discus on Saturday with a throw of 125’6″. Wolfe will compete in the discus at 11:30 Friday morning at the state meet.

Emmetsburg’s 4×100 relay, with Jake Vaughan, Trevor Dettmann, Mitch Wagner and Ethan Dykstra, would earn a fourth place finish with their time of :45.62, but narrowly missed out on a state berth.

Lucas Thomsen earned a fourth place finish in the shot put on Saturday, throwing 45’9“, but missed the state qualification by one inch. Thomsen would also compete in the discus, throwing 115′ for the E’Hawks.

The Distance Medley, Bobby Mortenson, Mitch Wagner, Tom Kuecker and Kyle Janssen, ran a 3:53.50 time, while the4x400 earned a seventh place with its 3:50.8 time. Members of the 4×400 were Bobby Mortenson, Tom Kuecker, Keaton Carter and Cory Schultes.

Mitch Wagner finished sixth in the 100 meter dash with a :12.09 time, while Taylor Morris had a :12.57 clocking. In the 400 meters, Kyle Janssen ran a :56.39 and Cory Schultes ran a :57.63.

In the 200 meter dash, Justin DeFord ran a :24.28 and Keaton Carter ran a :24.80, while Allen Dunnick finished the 1600 meters in a time of 5:12.61.

Rounding out Emmetsburg’s efforts in the long jump, Taylor Morris jumped 18’5″, while Trevor Dettmann jumped 20’1/4“, only to be disqualified for a uniform violation. In the high jump, Jared Janssen did not make the opening height of 5’6” and did not place.
