E’Hawk Thinclads Cutting Times Down As District Meet Nears

SPENCER – With the Class 2A District Track meet coming up this weekend, cutting times is the goal for the Emmetsburg E’Hawk track squad. The E’Hawks took second place honors Thursday at the Spencer Relays, finishing behind LeMars.

The E’Hawks continue to cut time on their shuttle hurdle relay, which is moving up in the standings in the state. The quartet of Jake Vaughan, Jake Morris, Trevor Dettmann and Ethan Dykstra came up strong with a :59.24 to win the event.

Jordan Mathisen won the shot put with a throw of 54’6” and Trevor Dettmann took the long jump with a leap of 20’2.25″.

Trevor Dettmann took top honors in the 110 high hurdles with a :15.30, but the E’Hawks suffered a setback in the event when Ethan Dykstra tripped and fell, breaking a wrist when he hit the track.

Jake Morris was second in the long jump with a leap of 18’1“, while Jared Janssen took second in the high jump, clearing 5’6”. The E’Hawks’ 4×200 relay, with Bobby Mortenson, Tommy Kuecker, Justin DeFord and Mitch Wagner, took a second place finish with their time of 1:35.25, while the 4×400 relay, with Bobby Mortenson, Mitch Wagner, Tommy Kuecker and Kyle Janssen, earned second place honors with their time of 3:58.03.

Joey Naig earned second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:06.52. Lucas Thomsen threw the shot put 47’4.25” for a third place finish, while Josh Wolfe placed fourth in the discus, throwing 141’10”. Mitch Wagner was fourth in the 100 meter dash with an :11.92 time, while Kyle Janssen earned fourth in the 400 meter dash with a tie of :56.01.

The E’Hawks’ 4×100 relay, with Joey Naig, Lucas Thomsen, Matt Fandel and Langston Jones, earned a fourth place with a time of :49.62.

The Distance Medley Relay, with Bobby Mortenson, Tommy Kuecker, Keaton Carter and Cory Schultes, took fifth with a time of 3:47.06. Justin DeFord was fifth in the 200 meter dash with a :24.03. Allen Dunnick finished the 1600 meters in a time of 5:28.17 for a seventh place finish.

Other varsity efforts included Lucas Thomsen with a discus throw of 117’4“.

For the Junior Varsity on Thursday, efforts included a first for Josh Wolfe in the shot put with a throw of 41’1′ and a sixth for Adam Leuer with a throw of 36’11”. Taylor Morris finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 18’5″ and Jared Janssen was second in the 400 meter dash with a time of :59.78.

The JV Shuttle Hurdle Relay, with Justin DeFord, Austin Oppenheimer, Justin Firkins and Joey Naig, was first with a 1:09.49. In the 100 meter dash, Langston Jones turned in a :13.16 time and Taylor Morris finished with a :12.22 time, while Matt Fandel had a :12.88 effort.

The E’Hawk 4×200 relay, with Joey Naig, Kyle Elbert, Langston Jones and Taylor Morris took third in 1:44.98 and the 4×400 relay of Kyle Elbert, Justin DeFord, Cory Schultes and Bobby Gappa took fourth with a 4:20.74 clocking.

Austin Oppenheimer finished the 110 hurdles in :20.00 and then ran the 400 hurdles in 1:10.36. Matt Fandel turned in a :26.24 effort in the 200 meter dash, while Justin Firkins finished the 200 meter dash in :30.08.

The Distance Medley Relay, with Jared Janssen, Bobby Gappa, Kyle Elbert and Allen Dunnick, turned in a time of 4:18.68.
