E’Hawks Third At Hackbarth Relays

ALGONA – Coach Joe Carter’s E’Hawk track team put in a good showing Tuesday at the Hackbarth Relays in Algona, claiming third place honors behind Algona and Humboldt.

The E’Hawks’ Shuttle Hurdle Relay is the sixth fastest in the state, and earned top honors Tuesday. The quartet of Jake Vaughan, Jake Morris, Trevor Dettmann and Ethan Dykstra turned in their fastest time of the season, a :59.78. Trevor Dettmann also won the long jump, jumping 20’1” for the E’Hawks.

Jordan Mathisen was second in the shot put, throwing in 51’3/4″ and Ethan Dykstra took second in the 110 hurdles with a career best :15.30.

The E’Hawks’ 4×200 relay, with Bobby Mortenson, Tommy Kuecker, Justin DeFord and Mitch Wagner, finished second in 1:35.24 and the 4×400 relay, with Mortenson, Wagner, Kuecker and Kyle Janssen, also finished second with a 3:51.90.

Trevor Dettmann took third in the 110 hurdles with a :15.71 clocking, while Kyle Janssen placed third in the 400 meter run in a time of :55.26. Ethan Dykstra set a season’s best mark of :59.11 in the 400 hurdles to finish fourth, while Taylor Morris took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 19′ and Jared Janssen too fifth in the high jump, clearing 5’4“.

Emmetsburg’s 4×100 relay, with Vaughan, Dettmann, Wagner and Dykstra, took fifth place honors with a :45.99 time, their best effort of the season.

Josh Wolfe had his best discus throw of the year at 131’11”, good for sixth place. Jake Morris earned seventh place in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:03.62, while Lucas Thomsen took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 44’3” and then placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 115’7″.

Other varsity efforts on Tuesday included Mitch Wagner with an :11.42 clocking in the 100 meter dash and Langston Jones with a :12.42 time in the 100. Justin DeFord ran a :23.89 in the 200 meter dash and Keaton Carter ran a :24.49 in the event to round out the varsity finishes.

For the E’Hawk Junior Varsity, the shuttle hurdle relay team, with Justin DeFord, Austin Oppenheimer, Justin Firkins and Joey Naig, were clocked at 1:09.12. Jared Janssen won the 400 dash in :58.05 and Jake Morris set a career best in the 110 hurdles with a time of :16.00. Morris then took second in the long jump, making a leap of 17’5” and Joey Naig took second in the 400 hurdles with his effort of 1:06.38.

Josh Wolfe took third in the shot put, throwing a career best 40’9″, while Cory Schultes took third in the 400 meter dash with a time of :56.02. Austin Oppenheimer was third in the 110 hurdles with a :20.39 clocking and then placed fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:09.63.

The JV 4×200 relay, with Naig, Kyle Elbert, Langston Jones and Taylor Morris took third with a 1:44.99 effort and the 4×400 relay, with Elbert, DeFord, Schultes and Bobby Gappa, took third in 4:09.67.

The 4×100 relay, comprised of Langston Jones, Florian Hoese, Matt Fandel and Taylor Morris, took fourth in :49.97 and the Medley relay of Bobby Mortenson, Tommy Kuecker, Keaton Carter and Cory Schultes took fourth with a 3:42.83 time.

Bobby Gappa earned fifth in the long jump, jumping 15’8” and the Medley relay of Naig, Gappa, Elbert and Allen Dunnick was fifth with a 4:09.22 effort. Rounding out the placings was the 4×100 relay comprised of Ben Pelzer, Josh Wolfe, Adam Leuer and Lucas Thomsen, who turned in a time of :52.62.

Other efforts from the JV squad included Adam Leuer with a shot put throw of 36’2″ and Florian Hoese running the 100 meter dash in :14.17. Allen Dunnick ran the 1600 meters in a time of 5:22.83, while Matt Fandel ran the 200 meters in :26.77 and Justin Firkins finished in :29.64.

“The kids performed very well,” noted Coach Carter. “I think we’re peaking at just the right time of the season.”

The E’Hawks will travel to Spencer tonight (Thursday) to compete in the Spencer Relays, and then travel to Estherville Lincoln Central on Monday, May 5, for the Lakes Conference Track Meet.
